5. Slide the forward clutch belt off the
engine pulley (C, Figure5-18), away from
engine (in the direction of arrow 1), out
from behind the belt guide (D), and com-
pletely off the pulley.
6. Slip the belt off the front of the trans-
mission pulley (E, Figure5-18, in the
direction of arrow 2).
7. Work the belt out from between the
pulley and the frame, around the transmis-
sion cover spring, then up and out of the
machine.

Installing ForwardClutch Belt
1. Stop engine, allow it to cool and dis-
connect spark plug wire before working
near belts. Also remove ignition key on
electric start models.
2. Removethe old forward clutch belt as
described in Removing Forward Clutch
Belt.
3. From the front of tiller, insert the
forward clutch belt in between the bottom
of the engine pulley (I, Figure5-19) and
the top of transmission pulley (P).
4. Insert the bottom half of belt into the
smaller, rear-most groove of the transmis-
sion pulley (E, Figure 5-18, in the direction
of arrow 3). Now slip the top half of belt
behind the belt guide (D, Figure 5-18, in
the direction of arrow 4) and onto the
large groove of engine pulley (C, Figure 5-
18).
5. Reconnectthe forward clutch cableto
the correct hole in the idler arm bracket,
as shown in Figure5-17.
NOTE: Be sure to position theclutch cable
on the pulley side (G, Figure5-20) of the
left-side cover support bracket (J).
IMPORTANT: Belt must be installed
behind the belt guide (H, Figure5-20).
6. Reinstall the reverse clutch belt. Insert
the bottom of the belt into the frame, then
pull down on the belt and slip it onto the
large, forward-most groove of the trans-
mission pulley (P, Figure 5-19).
Figure5.20: Correct forward clutchcable
positioning.
7. Pull back on the ReverseClutch
Control knob and make sure that the
reverse clutch belt fully contacts the
groove in the engine pulley. Releaseknob
and make sure that the belt doesn't
engage the reverse engine pulley. If it
does, it may cause the unit to move in
reverse when the Wheel Gear Lever is
engaged. Adjust the cable for less tension
if this condition occurs. See Checking
and Adjusting Reverse Belt Tension.
8. Reinstall the belt cover.
9. Test for correct tension on the forward
clutch belt. See Checking Forward Belt
Tension.
10. Move the unit to an open area and test
the reverse operation. It needs adjustment
if the belt slips in reverse or if there is no
reverse. SeeAdjusting ReverseClutch
Belt.
REVERSE CLUTCH BELT REMOVAL
AND REPLACEMENT
The reverse clutch belt (J, Figure 5-21) is
driven by the engine pulley (I, Figure5-
19). When the ReverseClutch Control
knob is pulled out, it pulls the reverse idler
arm and pulley (N, Figure5-21) inward,
which tightens the belt against the engine
pulley. This drives the transmission pulley
(L), resulting in reverse motion.
RemovingReverse ClutchBelt
1. Stop engine, allow it to cool and dis-
connect spark plug wire before working
near belts. Also remove ignition key on
electric start models.
2. Removebelt cover (Figure 5-13) by
removing two flange Iocknuts (C).
