Engine oil

Information on engine oils is available in
the c hap ter "S ervice, Ma intenanc e" on
page 165.
Eng ine oi l level and consum ption
Ev ery engine consumes engine oil for
tec hnical reasons. The engine oil
consump tion cannot be assessed until a
fairly long distance has been driv en, a nd
may be a bove the specified value when the
vehic le is first b eing driven (run-in period ).
Frequent d riv ing at high revs increases
engine oil consumption.

Warning
Do not a llow the engine oil lev el to drop
below the minimum level!
Before em barking on a long journey, it is
adv isable to chec k the engine oil level.

oil
The engine oil lev el must be check ed w ith
the vehicle on a level surface and with the
engine (which m ust be at operating
temperature) switched off. Wait at least
5 minutes before c hecking the level to
allow the normal engine oil acc um ulation
in the engine to flow into the oil pan.
To check the engine oil level, insert wiped
oil gauge (dipstick) into dipstick tube as far
as it will go. Top engine oil up if the lev el
ha s d ropp ed into the ra ng e of the top -up
mark MI N.
Self-help, vehicle care
The engine oil level must not exceed the
upper mark MAX on the dipstick. Excess
eng ine oil must be drained off or extracted.
If the engine oil level is above the M AX
ma rk there is a risk of damage to the
eng ine or the catalytic converter.
