BUCKING
BUCKING USING A SUPPORT (Fig. 15& 16)
Bucking is cutting a fallen tree to the desired log size, Another log or a stand, such as a sawhorse, may be usect as
supports when bucking°
TYPES OF CUTTING (Fig. 13)
• Area A - Undercut 1/3 of the way through the log,
° Overcutting - begin on the top side of the log with
the bottom of the saw chassis against the log; exert
light pressure downward,
° Undercutting - begin on the under side of the log
with the top of the saw chassis against the log; exert
light pressure upwar& During undercutting, the saw
will tend to push back at you. Be prepared for this
reaction and hold the saw firmly to maintain control.

OPERATING USE/TIPS
= Cut only one log at a time.
• Cut shattered wood very carefullyo Sharp pieces of wood
could be flung toward the operator.
= Use a sawhorse to cut small logs. Never altow another
person to hold the log while cutting and never hoId the
log with your leg or foot.
o Do not cut in an area where logs, limbs, and roots are
tangled such as in a bfown down area. Drag the logsinto
a clear area before cutting by pulling out exposed and
cleared logs first.,
o Give special attention to logs under strain to prevent the
saw from pinching Make the first cut on the pressure
side to relieve the stress on the log

o Stay on uphill side of tree when cutting,
WARNING
DO NOT STAND ON THE LOG BEING
CUT. ANY PORTION CAN ROLL CAUS-
ING LOSS OF FOOTING AND CONTROL.
NEVER TURN THE SAW UPSIDE DOWN
TO UNDERCUT. THE SAW CANNOT BE
CONTROLLED IN THIS POSITION.
