executive summary
The explosive growth in the amount of data being created, collected and analyzed has created an
unprecedented need for storage that is quickly integrated into existing environments, highly reliable, easy to
manage and maintain, and easily scalable. Contributing to the rapid growth of storage needs are high-
powered database engines, such as Oracle, that can make collecting and analyzing of data a more
efficient task. In the not too distant past, the use of Network Attached Storage (NAS or non-local storage)
to store a database's critical data files, was considered risky and unreliable. However, advances in
networking and storage technologies have changed this perception. It is now common for large, medium
and small businesses to use a network to store, access and share critical data. This document describes
how to implement an Oracle database utilizing the NAS 8000 as the storage receptacle for one or more
Windows-based Oracle databases.
This document is targeted at the Oracle database administrator and/or the IT administrator responsible for
the HP NAS 8000. Within this document the term 'server' shall refer to the Oracle server and NAS 8000
storage subsystem is synonymous with VA 7xxx array. It should be understood that although the Oracle
executable files may physically be located on the NAS 8000, the NAS 8000 does not execute any Oracle
code.
