executive summary

The explosive growth in the amount of data being created, collected and analyzed has created an
unprecedented need for storage that is quickly integrated into existing environments, highly reliable, easy to
manage and maintain, and easily scalable. Contributing to the rapid growth of storage needs are high-
powered database engines that can make the collection and analyzing of data a more efficient task. In the
not too distant past, the use of Network Attached Storage (NAS or non-local storage) to store a database's
critical data files, was considered risky and unreliable. However, advances in networking and storage
technologies have changed this perception. It is now common for large, medium and small businesses to
use a network to store, access and share critical data. This document describes how to implement
databases utilizing Microsoft's SQL Server (Version 7.0 or 2000) as the database engine with the NAS
8000 as the storage receptacle for the databases.
This document is targeted at the SQL Server database administrator and/or the IT administrator responsible
for the HP NAS 8000. Within this document the term 'server' shall refer to the system executing Microsoft's
SQL Server. NAS 8000 storage subsystem is synonymous with VA 7xxx array. It should be understood that
the NAS 8000 does not execute any Microsoft SQL Server code.
