Chapter Understanding Brocade SNMP The Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is an industry-standard method of monitoring and managing network devices. This protocol promotes interoperability, because SNMP-capable systems must adhere to a common set of framework and language rules. Understanding the components of SNMP makes it possible to use third-party tools to view, browse, and manipulate Brocade switch variables (MIBs) remotely as well as to set up an enterprise-level management process.

Understanding SNMP Basics Understanding SNMP Traps An unsolicited message that comes to the management station from the SNMP agent on the device is called a trap. Brocade switches send traps out on UDP port 162 only, therefore an SNMP management application must be running on UDP port 162.

From MIB-II onward, each network protocol group contains its own address translation tables. atTable 1.3.6.1.2.1.3.1 The Address Translation group contains one table, which is the union across all interfaces of the translation tables for converting a network address (for example, an IP address) into a subnetwork- specific address.
