To set the reference point for a transformation:
Select a transformation command, as described

in the following topics. A bounding box appears in
the image.
In the options bar, click a square on the
2
reference point locator (
sents a point on the bounding box. For example, to
set the reference point to the top left corner of the
bounding box, click the top left square on the
reference point locator.
Rotating layers, selections, and shapes
Rotating a layer, a selection on a layer, or a shape
turns it around the reference point. By default, this
point is at the center of the layer or selection;
however, you can move it to another location.
To rotate or flip a layer, selection, or shape:
Select the layer, area, or shape you want to

transform. (See "Specifying what to transform" on
page 126.)
Choose Image > Rotate, and choose one of the

following commands from the submenu:
90° Left to rotate the layer, area, or shape
•
counterclockwise by a quarter-turn.
90° Right to rotate the layer, area, or shape
•
clockwise by a quarter-turn.
180° to rotate the layer, area, or shape by a
•
half-turn.
• Flip Horizontal to flip the layer, area, or shape
horizontally.
• Flip Vertical to flip the image layer, area,
or shape vertically.

To freely rotate a layer, selection, or shape:
Select the layer, area, or shape you want to

transform. (See "Specifying what to transform" on
page 126.)
Choose Image > Rotate > Free Rotate.

To rotate around a point other than the center

of the layer or selection, see "Setting the reference
point" on page 126.
Do one of the following:

Move the pointer outside of the bounding
•
border (it becomes a curved, two-sided arrow)
( ), and then drag. Press Shift to constrain the
rotation to 15° increments.
Specify an angle of rotation in the options bar.

If desired, switch to a different type of transfor-

mation by clicking the Scale button (
Skew button ( ) in the options bar, or by
selecting a command from the Image > Transform
submenu.
When you're satisfied with the results, click the

OK button ( ) in the options bar, or press Enter
(Windows) or Return (Mac OS), to commit the
transformation.
Scaling layers, selections, and shapes
Scaling a layer, a selection on a layer, or a shape
enlarges or reduces it relative to its reference point.
You can scale horizontally, vertically, or both
horizontally and vertically.
