What next and FAQs
What do I do if backup fails due to open files?
Make sure applications are closed before the backup is run. Some applications, like Outlook might keep
the (.pdf) files open for some time even after the application is closed.
How do I back up other servers?
You have seen how quick and easy it is to back up and restore your data files. It is equally simple to back
up and manage a remote server. Use the Backup all servers wizard to back up the contents or a portion
of the contents of all servers in the HP Data Protector Express Software management domain. If you
cannot locate a server, contact your Administrator and ask to be granted the appropriate permissions.
When fully implemented, HP Data Protector Express Software can work with any network configuration
of Windows, NetWare and Linux machines with no limit of PC desktops, servers or backup devices.
When you purchase HP Data Protector Express Software, you purchase one base license for each HP Data
Protector Express Software management domain. The base license includes the HP Data Protector
Express Software catalog and one or more client or server machines, depending on the type of license.
You can also purchase licenses for a number of expansion options, such as additional clients.
How do I back up desktop machines?
Use the Backup all workstations wizard to back up all or a portion of the data stored on all PC desktops
in the HP Data Protector Express Software management domain. If you cannot locate a workstation,
contact your Administrator and ask to be granted the appropriate permissions.
How do I schedule regular backups?
By default, backup jobs are not scheduled. You must start these jobs manually each time you want to run
them. To use a different schedule type, you must select it from the Schedule Type list on the Schedule
property page for the job.
For jobs that do not need to run automatically on a regular schedule, HP Data Protector Express Software
provides four options: Not scheduled, Run now, Run on specific day, and Run on selected days. A
backup job that uses the Run now schedule type, will begin within a few seconds after you finish setting
it up.
If you plan to set up media rotation, choose Run repeatedly. Before setting up a schedule you should
define how long you will save the backup—for a certain number of days, weeks, months or years. The
type of backup (full, incremental) is also important and will define the amount of data that is backed up.
Please refer to the User's Guide and Technical Reference for further information.
TIP: Backup jobs designed to protect data from disaster should always be scheduled. This is the most
effective way of insuring that your data will be safely stored on media with regular backups. Media
rotation also helps protect your data by insuring that media is not over-used.
Which media can I use?
HP Data Protector Express Software supports various types of media:
Tape is the best medium for large full backups, long-term and offsite storage of backups and bulk
restores of large volumes.
Disk is the best medium for frequent incremental backups, storage of recent backups and recovering
single files or small data volumes. (HP Data Protector Express Software provides support for D2D
backups through the use of virtual tape libraries or removable devices.)
CD/DVD also provides quick access to single files, but limited storage capacity makes it suitable for
only smaller-scale archiving.
