Glossary
A standardized method of communication, e.g. IP.
RARP
Reverse Address Resolution Protocol, an Ethernet protocol used to resolve IP
addresses.
RAS
Remote Access Service, a service that supports dial-up connections.
Remote (address or port)
Refers to another machine you might communicate with, as opposed to your
(local) machine.
RIP
Routing Information Protocol, a UDP-based protocol used to send routing
information to systems on a network.
Service
An application or function often considered part of the operating system.
SLIP
Serial Line Internet Protocol, a predecessor to PPP.
SMTP
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, a popular email protocol.
SNMP
Simple Network Management Protocol. A protocol used to manage networks
and routing.
SPX
Sequenced Packet Exchange, a connection-based IPX protocol
TCP
A connection-based Internet Protocol carried in IP packets. Examples of
TCP-based applications and services are FTP, web browsing, email, and IRC.
