The current output of the DS7R is adjustable over the range 0mA to 999mA, with a compliance voltage variable from less than 100V to 400V. The pulse duration range can be varied from 50µs to 2 ms in six steps.

Users of the DS7R should have read and fully understood this document before proceeding. Although the DS7R is not a medical device, it has been designed for safe use in human research applications and meets all of the following standards:- ...

Stimulator. Indications for Use The Digitimer DS7R is an electrical stimulator intended to be used to apply a stimulus to a human subject via surface electrodes. It can be used to elicit a response from peripheral nerve fibres or muscle during research studies of human physiology, psychology and neuroscience.
Page 14
As an instance of such dangers, it is likely that when using the DS7R stimulator with recording apparatus, it will be necessary to have an earth/ground electrode on the subject somewhere in the vicinity of the recording electrodes.

2 years. Please contact us for a reference number and instructions before despatching the unit. As no parts of the DS7R are expected to age the only limitation to the service life is likely to be the ongoing ability to replace electronic components that may randomly fail. The components chosen are used conservatively and are all well-established parts so availability can be expected for many years.

OPERATOR’S MANUAL: DS7R CONSTANT CURRENT RESEARCH STIMULATOR MAINS CONNECTIONS The DS7R is shipped complete with a safety tested mains lead (fitted with a suitable moulded mains plug) to most countries. If the mains plug supplied is not suitable, please advise Digitimer of the correct plug for your country.

12. *A FAULT is indicated by an amber LED. When lit this indicates that the unit has detected a possible internal fault and should not be used. This LED will also illuminate if the DS7R is triggered “too fast” (i.e. <10ms repetition interval) in Alternating Polarity Mode. NB: As a test, this indicator will illuminate at power-on for a few seconds.

SECTION 3 – CONFIGURATION & OPERATION INTRODUCTION As the DS7R is capable of delivering high voltages and currents, it is vital for the safety of both the operator and the subject that the stimulator controls and the theory of operation are fully understood.
Page 25
The graph shows that at pulse durations in excess of 500µs, the maximum pulse energy delivered into 1000Ω load by the DS7R exceeds the 50mJ limit imposed by the medical device standard (IEC 60601-2-40) for evoked potential electrical stimulators*. The DS7R is NOT a medical device and is NOT suitable for human diagnostic or treatment use.
Page 26
PW is the Pulse Duration set on the unit, in microseconds (µs) Imax is the stimulus current, in milliamps (mA) In most cases of human stimulation this graph will not be of concern but when the DS7R is used with certain preparations it may have to be referred to.

OPERATOR’S MANUAL: DS7R CONSTANT CURRENT RESEARCH STIMULATOR STIMULUS CONTROLS There are four parameters on the unit that determine the strength and polarity of the stimulus given to the subject. These are:- Stimulus Duration set by 'Pulse Duration' control Stimulus Polarity set by the 'Pulse Polarity' control ...

1 second afterwards. This will cause the unit to immediately stop delivering stimuli as well as turning on the Amber “Fault” LED. When the DS7R has gone into this error state, the Output Enable switch must be moved to “OFF” (downwards) to reset the DS7R's error logic.

(+3 to +15V) +ve edge, TTL compatible). Foot switch input – 3.5mm mono socket allows a foot switch to trigger the unit. All trigger connections to the DS7R must be made to the rear panel, in the “TRIGGER” zone, hi-lighted in red below.
Page 31
Issue 02 INPUT TRIGGER The DS7R is factory set to trigger from the positive going edge of an applied external signal which should be between TTL (+5V) and +15V in amplitude and of at least 5µs duration. It can be changed so that the DS7R triggers from a negative going (from a positive voltage greater that +3V, to zero volts) input, The minimum voltage that is applied to this socket is -0.5V...
Page 33
Issue 02 SELECTING APPROPRIATE STIMULATION ELECTRODES Digitimer does not supply any electrodes with the DS7R stimulator as it can be used for a variety of applications and it is expected that most operators will already be familiar with the type of electrodes suitable for transcutaneous peripheral nerve/muscle stimulation and may have a preferred supplier.
Page 34
Trigger button is pressed the system acquires a sweep of data. - or - If the Triggering is set for the DS7R to be triggered by a data acquisition system - check that when the recording system sends a trigger pulse the DS7R TRIGGER indicator flashes.

- arrange the “recording electrode” leads so that they each run parallel to one of the “Stimulating Electrode” leads; - with the DS7R Output Enabled, a suitable stimulus intensity (start low at 5mA, and increase if necessary) and EMG amplifier settings, the data acquisition system should be able to record the artefact from the stimulator operating.

Before commencing the test procedure it is important to fully understand the operation of the DS7R by reading the Operator's Manual. There is no requirement, in any of these tests, to open the case of the DS7R. All repair procedures should be referred to Digitimer or a local distributor.

Leakage Currents - Connect the DS7R to the test equipment according to the instructions for a Class 1 device with Type BF applied parts. The applied parts of the DS7R are the red and black output terminals on the front panel. As they are Type BF they may be tested as one part.
