With the Messerschmitt Me 262, the first mass-produced "jet fighter", aerial ------
warfare took on an entirely new dimension. The speeds and rate of climb that
this new aircraft was capable of went well beyond the imagination of the pilots ------
of the time. In terms of manoeuvrability she' far outshone any propeller-driven _
fighter and, together with her superior firing power - four 30 mm cannons con
centrated in the nose
___ Mit der Messerschmitt Me 262, dem ersten in GroBserie gebauten "Dusen-
jager", erhielt der Luftkrieg eine vollig neue Dimension. Die Geschwindig-
------ keiten und Steigleistungen des neuen Flugzeugs bewegten sich jenseits der
Vorstellungskraft der damaligen Piloten. Dabei stand die Manovrierfahigkeit
dem' eines propellerangetriebenen Jagers in nichts nach und zusammen mit
•___ einer uberlegenen Feuerkraft - vier 30 mm Kanonen im Bug konzentriert - war
das der Stoff aus dem Legenden geboren werden. Der wichtigste Jager der
------ amerikanischen Army Air Force - wie sie noch bis nach dem Krieg hieB - war
die North American P-51 Mustang, deren Entwicklung noch aus dem Jahre
1940 stammte. Ironischerweise war sie eine Entwicklung fur die Royal Air
___ Force, die im Oktober 1940 320 Maschinen mit der Bezeichnung NA-73X
Mustang bestelite. North American lieB alle Erfahrungsbereiche der RAF in die
------ Entwicklung einflieBen und baute innerhalb der unglaublichen Zeit von nur 117
Tagen den ersten Prototypes Der vorgesehene Antrieb, ein Allison V-1710-39
mit 1.200 PS, erwies sich aber sehr schnell als kaum ausreichend, urn die
___ Mustang auf das Leistungsniveau der deutschen Jager zu bringen. Als Ausweg
wurden der neue Rolls-Royce Merlin, ein V-12 Motor mit 27,3 Litem Hubraum
------ und einer Leistung von fiber 1.620 PS - der bereits in der Spitfire hervorra-
gende Leistungen erbracht hatte - fur die weiteren Serienmaschinen vorgese-
hen. Dazu wurde die Firma Packard mit dem Lizenzbau des Motors beauftragt.
___ Die Serie erhielt die Bezeichnung P-51B und wurde auch in groBen
Stuckzahlen fur die USAAF gebaut, die den Ja(jer"bei der 8th Air Force in
----- Europa einsetzten. Die P-51B erwies sich als sehr langlebig. Trotz der
Weiterentwicklung in die noch ieistungsfahigere P-51 D blieb die B-Version bis
------ zum Ende des Krieges im Einsatz. Dabei zeiget sich sehr schnell, dass die
_ Sichtverhaltnisse der B keineswegs fur den Luftkampf ausreichten. Die fruhere
Entwicklung fur die RAF zahlte sich jetzt jedoch aus, denn die gewolbte
___ Cockpitverglasung der Spitfire passte in die Mustang-Verglasung. Dadurch
bekam der Pilot eine etwas bessere Sicht nach schrag hinten. Viele Einheiten
------ riisteten ihre Maschinen mit dem als Malcolm-Hood bezeichneten Teil nach. Die
von England aus operierenden Mustang-Einheiten flogen meist Langstrecken-
. Begleitschutz fur die amerikanischen Bomber - und so trafen sie gegen Ende
___ des Krieges verstarkt auf die leistungsmaBig uberlegenen Me 262, die jedoch
eine Achilles-Ferse hatten: Bei Start und Landung waren sie so verwundbar wie
------ jedes andere Flugzeug. Das beruhmte JV 44 (Jagdverband 44) hatte daher
auch einen eigenen Schutzschwarm mit Me 109G und FW 190 D-9.

important fighter plane of the American Army Air Force - so called up until the
end of the war - was the North American P-51 Mustang whose development ------
dated back to 1940. Ironically, it was a development of the Royal Air Force, who
in October 1940 ordered 320 aircraft with the designation NA-73X Mustang.
North American crammed all the experience of the RAF into her development ___
and within as little as 117 days built the first prototype. The intended engine, an
Allison V-1710-39 with 1,200 hp, soon proved itself to be inadequate for brin- ------
ging the Mustang into line with the German fighters's performance capabilities.
For the aircraft of the subsequent series, the solution was to use the new Rolls-
Royce Merlin, a V-12 engine with 27.3 I capacity and more than 1,620 hp - ___
which had already given a first-rate performance in the Spitfire. For this, the
company Packard was commissioned to build the engine under licence. The ------
series was assigned the designation P-51 B and was also built in large numbers
for the USAAF, who deployed the fighter for the 8th Air Force in Europe. The P-
51B enjoyed a long service life. Despite being developed further into the P-51 D ___
with an even better performance profile, the B version remained in service right
up until the end of the war. During that time it soon became apparent that the ------
visibility offered by the P-51 B was totally inadequate for aerial combat. This is
where the earlier development for the RAF now came into its own because the
glass used in the Spitfire's domed cockpit canopy also proved suitable for use_ _
with the Mustang. As a result, pilots had a slightly better view of what was going
on diagonally behind them. Many units subsequently equipped their aircraft with ------
this part, referred to as the "Malcolm Hood". The Mustang units operating from
England mostly flew long-distant escort missions for the American bombers - ——
and so increasingly came up against the superior-performing Me 262's towards _
the end of the war. However, the enemy plane did have an Achilles heel: on
starting and landing it was as vunerable as any other aircraft. The famous 44th ___
Combat Unit JV 44 therefore had a special protection squad deploying Me
109G's and Fw 190 D-9's. ------
