Chapter 1 Introduction The W L-3563 is an IEEE 802.11g W ireless PCMCIA card that can operate in either Ad-Hoc mode (Point to Point/Point to Multipoint without an Access Point) or Infrastructure mode (Point to Point/Point to Multipoint with an Access Point). IEEE 802.11g uses 2.4GHz frequency band that is the same with IEEE 802.11b, but provides high-speed transfer rate up to 54Mbps that is almost 5 times throughput rate than 802.11b.
LAN is called an Infrastructure configuration. A group of WL-3563 PC users and an Access Point compose a Basic Service Set (BSS). Each WL-3563 PC in a BSS can talk to any computer in the wired LAN infrastructure via the Access Point.
Difficult-to-wire environments Historical or old buildings, asbestos installations, and open areas where wiring is difficult to be employed. Frequently changing environments Retailers, manufacturers and banks that frequently rearrange the workplace and change locations. Temporary LANs for special projects or peak time Trade shows, sports events, exhibitions and construction sites that are required temporary setup for a short period.
1.4 Package Contents Before installation, please check the items of your package. The package should include the following items: 1 x WL-3563 1 x Quick Installation Guide 1 x Drivers and User’s Manual CD If any of the above items are missing, contact your supplier as soon as possible.
Note: The following installation operates under Window 2003. Procedures will be similar to Window 98/Me/2000/XP. Please install the configuration utility before insert WL-3563 into the PCMCIA slot of the computer. Insert the CD-ROM into the CD-ROM to initiate the autorun program. Once completed a menu screen will appear as follows.

Please click “Finish” to complete the installation. Please restart your PC to let the WL-3563 works. Note: It is recommended to use PLANET utility to configure WL-3563, even under windows XP or server 2003 system. Thus, please disable the “Wireless Zero Configuration Service” in windows system before activating PLANET utility.
Following details the configuration options. 3.1 Link Info. In screen above, you can check the status when WL-3563 is working. You can also press “Radio Off” button to let the WL-3563 stop working. When WL-3563 stops working, the button will...
3.2 Configuration In this option, you can configure the settings of WL-3563 for the AP it will connect to. After configuration, please press ”Apply” to save settings or “Cancel” to set again. SSID: Shows and can be configured the SSID of the BSS that willing to join.
Note: When you enable WEP function, please ensure you have set the same key number and key value as the wireless device you connect to. For example: Your Access Point is working with WEP Key1 and key value (AAAAA), please ensure WL-3563 is using the same settings to work to this Access Point.
Click “ Refresh “ to collect the BSSID and Channel information of all the wireless devices around you. If you wish to connect to any device on the “Available Network” list, select the device on the list and click “Connect”, then WL-3563 will connect to the selected device and create a profile for the selected device automatically.
Appendix This section provides some technology document of IEEE802.11b. Read the description below to know the standards about IEEE802.11g. ü What is the IEEE 802.11g standard? The IEEE 802.11g Wireless LAN standards subcommittee, which is formulating a standard for the industry. The objective is to enable wireless LAN hardware from different manufactures to communicate.

frequency in a pattern that is known to both transmitter and receiver. Properly synchronized, the net effect is to maintain a single logical channel. To an unintended receiver, FHSS appears to be short-duration impulse noise. Direct-sequence spread-spectrum (DSSS) generates a redundant bit pattern for each bit to be transmitted.
Glossary Access Point: An internetworking device that seamlessly connects wired and wireless networks. Ad-Hoc: An independent wireless LAN network formed by a group of computers, each with a network adapter. ASCII: American Standard Code for Information Interchange, ASCII, is one of the two formats that you can use for entering the values for WEP key.

(senses the carrier). If it is not, it waits a random amount of time before retrying. If the network is quiet and two devices access the line at exactly the same time, their signals collide. When the collision is detected, they both back off and wait a random amount of time before retrying. DHCP: Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, which is a protocol that lets network administrators manage and allocate Internet Protocol (IP) addresses in a network.

benefit of humanity, the advancement of the profession. The IEEE fosters the development of standards that often become national and international standards. Infrastructure: An infrastructure network is a wireless network or other small network in which the wireless network devices are made a part of the network through the Access Point which connects them to the rest of the network.

TCP/IP: Transmission Control Protocol/ Internet Protocol. The basic communication language or protocol of the Internet. It can also be used as a communications protocol in a private network, i.e. intranet or internet. When you are set up with direct access to the Internet, your computer is provided with a copy of the TCP/IP program just as every other computer that you may send messages to or get information from also has a copy of TCP/IP.
