Epson 1400 Manual

What's in the Box

Set Up Instructions

  1. Confirm all nozzles print perfectly with Epson ink then remove cartridges from printer. If not all nozzles print fully or correctly with Epson ink, cleaning will be needed to get the print head in good working order before installing any third party ink. Please contact the Inkjetmall support department if you have trouble getting a full nozzle check to print, we can assist you with cleaning procedures.
  2. Fill bottles with ink. Keep the ink level between ½" from the top and 1" from the bottom of the bottle to avoid ink flow problems. Make sure to put the correct color or Piezography shade ink into the correct bottle when filling and refilling. Bottle tops indicate the color position and bottle labels indicate the Piezography ink shade.
Set Up Instructions - Step 1
  3. Push ink button on printer to move head into ink change position, then UNPLUG printer from power.
  4. Remove carriage lid and cartridges from printer. You must break one of the side tabs to remove lid.
Set Up Instructions - Step 2
  5. Piezography ink users: Clean color ink off points in print head. Using Q-tips and PiezoFlush or warm distilled water, wipe each point carefully in a circular motion with a slightly damp Q-tip then absorb any liquid using dry Q-tips. This is to avoid color staining in your CIS dampers and B&W prints.
warning Note: photos below are not specific to the 1400, but this cleaning procedure is the same for all desktop printer models.
Set Up Instructions - Step 3
  6. Install chips into cartridge carriage with supports (shown below). Make sure to push chips and supports down all the way for tight connection with sensors.
Set Up Instructions - Step 4
  7. Move cartridge carriage to the left, then slide dampers and tubes under bar (shown below)
Set Up Instructions - Step 5
  8. Pull ink from bottles to fill tubes. To do this, squeeze the suction bottle and insert the tip of the bottle into the bottom hole of a damper. Press the tip of the bottle tightly into the damper hole to get a good seal then release the bottle so it pulls ink from the bottle thru the tube and to the damper.
Set Up Instructions - Step 6
  9. Close ink tube clamp. For best flow, fill the damper channel and oval chamber with ink as much as possible, but it is unnecessary to draw ink into the suction bottle. Once ink fills the damper, clamp the ink line closed (shown below).
Set Up Instructions - Step 7
  10. Push damper into print head. Make sure to install dampers in the correct positions in the printer and push all the way down for a tight seal. Once ink lines are filled and dampers are all installed in the printer, release clamps to open ink flow. Make sure ink lines return to round shape after clamp is opened. If pinch remains in line after opening clamp, pinch tube in opposite direction with finger and thumb.
Set Up Instructions - Step 8
  11. Install lid over dampers in print head as shown below. Place tape over damper lid as shown to prevent tubes from bending forward as they naturally want to do.
Set Up Instructions - Step 9
  12. Install tube brackets on printer (shown below) Place tubes flat from dampers to ink bottles, using brackets to hold in place. For proper tube placement, yellow tube should be at the top and cyan at the bottom (see photos above). Allow only enough slack in the ink tubes so the print head can move to the far right side of the printer without slack or tension in the tubes- having too much or not enough slack in the tubes will make the tubes not move and bend correctly.
Set Up Instructions - Step 10
  13. Perform 2-3 Clean Cycles to purge Epson ink and fill printer with ConeColor ink, or 4-5 Clean Cycles when switching from Epson to Piezography ink to eliminate color staining in your B&W prints. Print a nozzle check prior to printing images to make sure all nozzles are fully printing and color is correct.

OPERATE PRINTER WITH LID OPEN TO GIVE INK LINES ROOM TO BEND, CLOSE LID WHEN PRINTER UNUSED.

HELPFUL INFORMATION

  • Pigment ink can be difficult to keep in solution and settles if not regularly agitated. To keep the ink printing at full density, gently shake the ink bottles every 1-2 weeks to keep the pigment in solution. If the printer is not used for two weeks or more, gently shake all the ink bottles then do 2-3 cleaning cycles. This will purge the settled ink from the CIS tubes and fill with ink from the shaken bottles.
  • Reset cartridges when read empty: When cartridge(s) read empty and the printer tells you to replace a cartridge (steady red ink change light), simply push the ink change button, which will move the head to indicate which cartridge(s) to replace. Push the ink change button a second time to move the head to the ink change position, then a third time to finish the ink change procedure. The cartridge chip(s) will now read full of ink.
  • Use the printer on a regular basis for best function. To keep the ink moving thru the ink lines and the head moist, print a small image or do a cleaning cycle every week if the printer is not used regularly. It is not recommended to leave pigment ink installed in a printer that will not be used for several months at a time- please contact our support department if you need to leave your printer unused for a month or more.
  • After printing thru a few bottles of ink, the in-line ink filters may collect ink particles and restrict ink flow. These filters can be easily replaced and the line re-primed with ink. Contact Inkjetmall support department if your ink flow seems restricted.
  • Monitor and maintain humidity levels between 40-50% in the printing area. Both low and high humidity can cause problems with the printer, ink and paper.
  • When refilling the CIS ink bottles: pinch the ink tube closed above the bottle (shown below) before unscrewing bottle tops to keep line filled with ink. Once bottle is full of ink (make sure to fill the bottles with the correct color or Piezography ink shade), screw the top on tight then unclip the ink tube. Make sure ink lines return to round shape after clamp is opened, if pinch remains in line after opening clamp pinch tube in opposite direction with finger and thumb.

To remove dampers from print head, use damper removal key as shown below: HELPFUL INFORMATION - To remove dampers
