Description and Function

warningATTENTION! Please read the user manual completely and carefully. It is part of the product and includes important information for proper installation and use. Keep this guide to have it available, when there are uncertainties, or the product will be passed on.
Your network tester is made for measuring the specified cables and identifies continuity, miswiring, open pins, short-circuits, crossover cables and grounding.

Intended Use

Use the device like described in chapter 1, only. We do not permit using it in other ways. Use the product only in dry interior rooms. If not attending to these regulations and notes on safety, it might causes fatal accidents, injuries and damages to persons and property.

Notes on Safety

warning ATTENTION! Only skilled electricians may assemble and disassemble the housing of the product. There is a risk of electric shock and short circuit!

  • Your product is not a toy and is not meant for children, because it contains small parts which can be swallowed and injured when used inappropriately!
  • Install and store the product and its accessories in a way persons cannot be injured, or objects not be damaged for example by dropping or stumbling.
  • Remove or store the packing materials well, because children may cut themselves on them while playing. Furthermore, there is a risk of swallowing and inhalating of incidentals and insulating material.
  • Also read the manual of your devices, to be tested, for checking the compatibility and fitting of the connectors to the product and the other way round.
  • A defective device may not be put into operation, but must be disconnected from mains and protected against further use. Repairing, such as assembling and disassembling the housing, is only allowed to skilled professionals. By repairing it yourself, you will loose all warranties and there is a risk of electric shock and short circuit.
  • Drive the product only with 9 V DC battery block.
  • Avoid places with high temperatures, humidity, or places which might come into contact with water.
  • Do not place things on the device.
  • Mind and follow the terms of law and health care for using the device in industry.
  • Never expose the product to high mechanical pressure.
  • Do not modify or change the product or its accessories! Also mind chapter "warranty and liability".
  • Connect all cables softly and slowly to the product to avoid damages.
  • Do not use damaged parts.
  • The device may only be installed and used in dry interior rooms.
  • Never use the device with live cables!
  • Remove the battery from the device, when it is not used for longer time.

Removing the Battery

  1. Put off the battery case by sliding it towards the arrow.
  2. Connect a 9 V battery block (6LR61) to the connection cable. A battery is not included.
  3. Close the battery case. Mind not pinching the cable during closing the battery case for correct function.

Operating Elements

  1. ON/OFF SWITCH:
    model 68856 and 93010: slide switch ON/OFF
    model 68857 and 68858: round button - in the middle of the housing
  2. TEST KEY:model 93010: The testing function is only activated by pressed test key.
  3. USING THE MAIN DEVICE AND THE ExTERNAL RECEIVER:
    model 93010: the external receiver is bulk.
    models 68856, 68857 and 68858: The external receiver can be fixed to the main device by sliding it in.
    Use the external receiver for extensively installed and long cables. It can be connected to a wall plate or patch panel during measuring at the appropriate testing place.
  4. CONNECTORS:
    models 68856 and 93010: modular sockets
    model 68857: RJ45, RJ11, USB socket
    model 68858: RJ45, RJ11, IEEE 1394, USB socket

    Check 10Base-T, 10Base-2 cables, RJ45, RJ11 cables, 258A, as well as TIA-568A/568B and Token Ring cables.

Operating

  1. BULK CABLES:all models: Check bulk cables by using the main device. Use adaptors for special cables.
    The models 93010, 68857 and 68858 can also test BNC cables by using the included adaptors.
  2. PATCH PANELS / WALL PLATES / other CABLES:
    all models: Use the external receiver like described.

  3. MEASURING:
    model 93010:
    1. Connect a fitting cable to the device.
    2. Switch on the device.
    3. Select between AUTo- and MANUAL-mode. AUTo-mode tests all twisted pairs independently. Use the MANUAL-mode to check each pair separately.

models 68856, 68857 and 68858:

  1. Connect a fitting cable to the device.
  2. Switch on the device.
  3. The product shows all characteristics of the connected cable automatically.

model 68856:
BNC TEST:

situation 1: Pin 2 is configurated 1:1 - cable ok
situation 2: Pin 2 is not connected. - cable defect
situation 3: Pin 2 and 3 are short-circuited. - cable defect
situation 4: Pin 2 is connected to Pin 6 - crossover cable or defect

FUNCTIONS:
model 68857:

S flashes on for correct connected screening
C/1-8 LEDs flash on for correct wiring
SHORT Short-circuit
CONNECTED pins connected 1:1 / BNC 25 ohms
NON-PARALLEL interchanged leads / BNC 50 Ohms
NO CONNECTION cable defect / no termination
BATTERY GOOD battery full
BATTERY LOW battery empty remove it

model 68858:

POWER device is switched on
LOW BATTERY battery empty remove it
CONNECTED pins connected 1:1
NO CONNECTION cable defect
SHORT Short-circuit
CROSS interchanged lead / crossover cable
Matrix LEDs of the specific cable types flash on

Care, Maintenance, Storage and Transport

shock hazardATTENTION! There is a risk of electric shock and short circuit!

  • Open only the battery case for removing the battery (9V battery block - 6LR61).
  • Always disconnect all cables at first!
  • Use a dry linen cloth to clean your product, or use a slightly moist cloth for heavy stains. Look out for live cables of your device during cleaning! Do not use any cleaning supplies and avoid liquid entry to the device.
  • Avoid places with high temperatures, humidity, or places which can become wet, also during care, maintenance, storage, and transport.
  • Mind the notes on safety also regarding care, maintenance, storage and transport.
  • Keep the product away from children!
  • Reposit the original packaging as protection from dust and humidity for transporting.
  • Follow the safety symbols on the packing during transport.

Troubleshooting

Problem Help

The network tester does not work

  • Use the right battery with right polarity (9 V Block, 6LR61).
  • Remove the battery

Read "Operating Elements" and "Operating ".

Opposite cable connection

  • cable could be a crossover cable, mostly used between 2 computers
  • Use a 1:1 wired cable to connect a computer to the router.
