Smoke Detector Tester
Operating Instructions
INTRODUCTION
The Simplex Smoke Detector Tester uses an aerosol smoke spray (not supplied) to test smoke detectors, To test a
smoke detector, follow Steps 1 through 10 below. You must use an extender pole (not supplied) when testing ceiling
or wall-mounted detectors (see Figure 1 for more information on smoke detector tester parts).

NOTE:
To adjust the angle of the tester, remove lock pin from the base of the tester. Adjust the unit to the proper
angle and reinsert lock pin.
CAUTION:
You must not spray the aerosol smoke directly into the smoke detector. You must use the tester unit to
test smoke detectors.
1. Turn the top of the canister assembly counterclockwise until it is released from the ratchet assembly.
2. Remove cap from aerosol smoke spray can.
Center
the can on the ratchet assembly base.
CAUTION:
The smoke detector tester uses a pressurized aerosol smoke spray.
Do not use or store
near spark,
heat, or open flame. Observe all CAUTlON statements on can label. Do not store tester unit with
aerosol can installed.
3. Line up threads on the canister with those of the ratchet assembly and turn clockwise until unit is secure.
4. Determine the approximate height of the detector to be tested.

Attach appropriate extender pole.
5. To extend the tester pole, press in and hold the red button on the pole.
6. Extend the pole to the correct height and release button to lock into place.
7. Carefully place containment bowl over smoke detector.
