  • Page 5 Instrument assembly Slot the four panels of the instrument stand into the foot of the lower body joint (d). Remove the seal protectors and place them in the case. Place the middle body joint (c) onto the lower joint (d). Pay close attention to the orientation of the keys—the thumb keys to the rear, all other keys facing forward.
  • Page 6 • The middle body joint (c) has keys on opposing sides. It also has seals on both ends. • The lower body joint (d) has the right-hand key group on the front and a large central panel hiding the electromagnetic key mechanism. Gently tighten the ribbed thumb nuts while pressing down on the middle joint (c) to slightly compress the seals.
  • Page 7 After drying, place the protectors back on the joint seals so that they cannot become damaged during storage. Charge the batteries if necessary. About the electronics The sub-sub-great bass is equipped with electromagnetic keys and requires electrical power. You have the option of using rechargeable batteries or an external power supply plugged into an electrical outlet.
  • Page 8: The Head: Bocal Vs. Direct-Blow

The head joint: bocal vs. direct-blow For every instrument in the Paetzold by Kunath square recorder family there is a suitable head-or heads—as we offer the choice of two, depending on the musical style and the preferred means of expression: The HP-ORIGINAL (with a short bocal and mouth piece) and the DIRECT- BLOW.
  • Page 9 In order to offer more flexibility in adjusting the height of the mouthpiece on our largest square basses, the DIRECT-BLOW heads on our subcontrabass and sub-sub-great bass are provided with an articulated extender. The mouthpiece is inserted into the extender, which itself is then gently inserted while rotating into the windhole (arrow) on the rear of the head joint.

  • Page 11 Do not grasp or otherwise lift up on the keys of your square recorder When removing your instrument from the case or bag, it is best to grasp the body itself, taking care to avoid the keys. If you should lift the instrument by its keys, you could damage their mechanism.
  • Page 12 The batteries must be removed from the instrument after playing and for storage. When not in use, the power switch should be set to off (center position). When traveling abroad, please pay attention to the country- specific power specifications and use a suitable adapter if necessary.
  • Page 13: Getting Started

Focus on the hidden beauty within your instrument; your new Paetzold by Kunath square bass will fully reward the effort.
  • Page 14: Operation Of The Keys

Yet another reason that we can promise you lasting enjoyment of your Paetzold by Kunath square bass. And should a problem arise, we are always there to help.
  • Page 15 Often in a modern composition, the composer will intentionally make use of a percussive effect with the Paetzold keys. This is easily achieved by letting your fingers rapidly and forcefully fall onto the keys.
  • Page 16 Paetzold by Kunath square bass. The double keys for tone holes 6a and 6b thus offer a clever solution here: Although the two holes are a bit far apart, they can be played comfortably with a small movement of the finger thanks to the double keys.
  • Page 17 The electromagnetic key mechanism—very similar to that used in organ building—offers a low-maintenance, effective alternative. In our sub-sub-great bass we use a combination of mechanical and electromagnetic keys. The left hand plays manually operated keys as usual; these are only slightly larger compared to our other square basses.
  • Page 18: Tuning And Fingering

Tuning and fingering Paetzold by Kunath square recorders are tuned to 442 Hz and largely follow traditional baroque fingering. Thanks to our proprietary 180 degree construction bend(s), our square recorders can be built much smaller than would actually be necessary for the desired tuning.
  • Page 19: Care And Maintenance

Care and maintenance The surface of your square recorder To preserve and protect the surface, you should gently wipe down your bass recorder from time to time with a lint-free, clean cloth. A few drops of furniture polish on the cloth will help to maintain the silky shine and protect the finish from cracking.
  • Page 20 Replacing the seals You can replace damaged seals on the instrument as follows: Carefully remove the old seals and any adhesive residue. Note the correction orientation of the seals. The larger seal is attached to the lower body joint between the assembly tabs. Peel off the protective film from the larger replacement seal and place it adhesive-side down gently on the lower body section without changing or disturbing its shape.
  • Page 21 Carefully remove the old seals and all adhesive residue. Take note of which seal sits where on the tuning ring. Place the smaller seal with the protective film facing up inside the larger seal of the instrument’s upper body section. Carefully remove the protective film from the smaller seal, making sure that the two gaskets remain in their nested position.
  • Page 22 Disinfection If you share your instrument with other players from time to time or if several people play the same instrument, it is advisable to disinfect the mouthpiece regularly. We recommend Flautisept for this purpose; it is available in our online shop at: www.blockfloetenshop.de Flautisept is safe for player and recorder.

With the help of the pliers, carefully reinsert the axle and push it back in the other direction using the knitting needle until the extraction process can be repeated on the other side and the other keys are free.

  • Page 25 condensation water is trapped by the condensation plug and drip cup before it can reach the windway. Narrowing of the windway Another type of hoarseness can occur after an extensive period of regular or frequent playing; clearing the windway will not eliminate it and it tends to become more pronounced with continued use of the instrument.
  • Page 26 to help you. Should a lever key begin to make a slight creaking noise, this is in most cases because the cork strip on the rear end of the key is too dry. The addition of a spot of cork grease or key oil on the cork strip will usually take care of the noise.
