First assemble the instrument stand. Place the lower body joint (c) in the stand. Remove the seal protectors and place them in the case. Place the upper body joint (b) onto the lower body (c). Pay close attention to the orientation of the keys—the thumb keys to the rear, all other keys facing forward.

Disassemble the instrument after playing (including the bocal assembly and condensation plug in the case of the HP-ORIGINAL) so that the individual parts can dry out. After drying, place the protectors back on the joint seals so that they cannot become damaged during storage. Disassemble the stand and stow it away in the instrument case.
The head joint: bocal vs. direct-blow For every instrument in the Paetzold by Kunath square recorder family there is a suitable head—or heads—as we offer the choice of two, depending on the musical style and the preferred means of expression or method of blowing: the HP-ORIGINAL and the DIRECT-BLOW.
Page 8
HP-ORIGINAL—or in rotation with it. The DIRECT-BLOW head can also be adapted to previously manufactured Paetzold by Kunath square basses. The DIRECT-BLOW head joint has no bocal or external mouthpiece; instead the player—much as with a traditional recorder—blows directly into the windway.
Handling the instrument Our Paetzold by Kunath square basses are fairly indestructible; almost all parts can be repaired; even instruments that have been in use for decades can be refurbished and modernized. Thanks to the special construction of the head joint, the windway can also be replaced without much effort—a measure that can significantly improve the sound of your...

recorder When removing your instrument from the case or bag, it is best to grasp the body itself, taking care to avoid the keys. If you should lift the instrument by its keys, you could damage their mechanism. A small stop screw under each key ensures that they remain in alignment and open to a specific height.
Yet another reason that we can promise you lasting enjoyment of your Paetzold by Kunath square recorder. And should a problem arise, we are always there to help.

Often in a modern composition, the composer will intentionally make use of a percussive effect with the Paetzold keys. This is easily achieved by letting your fingers rapidly and forcefully fall onto the keys.
Page 15
Paetzold by Kunath square subcontrabass. The double keys for tone holes 6a and 6b thus offer a clever solution here: Although the two holes are a bit far apart, they can be played comfortably with a small movement of the finger thanks to the double keys.
Page 16
The lever system for the holes 7a and 7b ensures that the lowest sounding notes are easily accessible despite the large distance. The split levers also make it possible to play the semitones more easily. When the lever key 7a is depressed, both keys of the double hole 7 are automatically closed.
Tuning and fingering Paetzold by Kunath square recorders are tuned to 442 Hz and, with the exceptions noted, largely follow traditional baroque fingering. Thanks to our proprietary 180 degree construction bend, our square recorders can be built much smaller than would actually be necessary for the desired tuning.
Care and maintenance The surface of your square recorder To preserve and protect the surface, you should gently wipe down your square bass from time to time with a lint-free, clean cloth. A few drops of furniture polish on the cloth will help to maintain the silky shine and protect the finish from cracking.
Page 19
Please be sure to always use the seal protectors when disassembling your square bass. Replacing the seals You can replace damaged seals on the instrument as follows: Carefully remove the old seals and any adhesive residue. Note the correction orientation of the seals. The larger seal is attached to the lower body joint between the assembly tabs.
Page 20
Following this procedure should ensure the correct fit of the double seals and an air-tight connection. Replacing damaged seals on the tuning rings This requires a little more skill, especially when attaching the larger seal gaskets. Carefully remove the old seals and all adhesive residue. Take note of which seal sits where on the tuning ring.

If you are unsure about undertaking this yourself, we will be happy to do it for you. Disinfection If you share your instrument with other players from time to time or if several people play the same instrument, it is advisable to disinfect the mouthpiece regularly.
Page 22
Each set of keys is held in place by a two-part (split) axle. Please be aware that very small washers may be found between the individual keys and the bearing posts. During disassembly these must be noted and carefully replaced in their original positions when re-installing the keys. Proceed as follows to remove the keys: The two-part axle can be pushed in on one side with a thin knitting needle and carefully drawn out with a fine pliers on the other side until the first key is...

condensation water is trapped by the condensation plug and drip cup before it can reach the windway. Narrowing of the windway Another type of hoarseness can occur after an extensive period of regular or frequent playing; clearing the windway will not eliminate it and it tends to become more pronounced with continued use of the instrument.

If none of these suggestions solve the problem, we will be happy to help you. If the pitch of your instrument is too high, the included tuning rings can help. These are available in two different thicknesses (except for tenor and basset).
