The tape fast forwards and rewinds correctly but when I try to dictate the cassette remains stationary and the warning beeps. How do I rectify this.

The issue could be that the cassette's erase protection tab is broken, which prevents recording or erasing. The TRC-8800 gives a warning beep if you attempt to record or erase a cassette with the erase protection tab removed.
