Entrust nShield® 5s Quick Start Guide
This guide shows how to set up an nShield 5s for the first time and to start using it with the nShield
Security World software. For more detailed information about setup procedures and options, see the
nShield 5s Installation Guide and appropriate chapters of the nShield 5s User Guide.
1.
Power off the computer into which you are going to install the nShield 5s. This can be either a desktop
PC or a server.
2.
Open the computer case and locate an empty PCIe x4 slot. See the instructions that your computer
manufacturer supplied to correctly identify the slots on your computer.
For a desktop PC, Entrust suggests that an adjacent slot is used to house a cooling fan.
For a server, cooling fans will already be present. However, some configuration of fan speed and
direction within the server may be required.
For full details, see the Temperature Monitoring for Airflow Validation section in the nShield 5s User
Guide.
3.
Taking Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) precautions, remove the nShield 5s from its packaging.
4.
Check the nShield 5s to ensure that there is no sign of damage or tampering.
NOTE - If the nShield 5s has been supplied from the factory, it will be in factory state.
Check the epoxy resin security coating for obvious signs of damage.
If you intend to install the nShield 5s with an external smart card reader, check the cable for signs
of tampering. If evidence of tampering is present, do not use and request a new cable.
5.
If there is a blanking plate across the opening to the PCI-e x4 slot, remove it.
6.
Check that the fitted mounting bracket on the nShield 5s is the correct height for the slot.
If the bracket is not the same height as the slot, replace it with the correct bracket. Both full-height and
low-profile brackets are supplied with the nShield 5s.
NOTE - Do not touch the connector pins or the exposed
area of the nShield 5s without taking ESD precautions.
a.
Remove the two screws from the solder side of the
nShield 5s.
b.
Remove the incorrect bracket.
c.
Fit the correct bracket to the component side of the
nShield 5s.
d.
Insert the two screws into the solder side of the
nShield 5s to secure the bracket. Do not over tighten
the screws.
