Water
While it may not seem like an important ingredient, coffee is 98 percent water. The type of water that you brew with greatly affects the final taste. Always use fresh, cold water that is filtered and free of impurities – avoid soft water or well water. Please refer to the "Advanced Water Filtration System" section to learn more about how your coffeemaker reduces impurities in water.

Routine Cleaning

Cleanliness
A clean coffeemaker is essential to brewing great tasting coffee each and every time.

Daily Cleaning

Make sure your coffeemaker is unplugged and has cooled completely before cleaning.
Remove the Brew Basket, Pod Holder, Carafe, Carafe lid,
Removable Water Reservoir, and Reusable Single Serve Coffee Filter. Wash them in a solution of hot water and mild liquid soap, and dry thoroughly. You can also place the Brew Basket, Pod Holder, and Reusable Single Serve Coffee Filter in the dishwasher; top-rack only. The Carafe, Carafe lid, and Removable Water Reservoir are not dishwasher safe and should be hand washed only.

Decalcifying your coffeemaker
Minerals (calcium/limestone) found in water will leave deposits in your coffeemaker and affect its performance. It's recommended that you regularly remove these deposits using vinegar.

  1. Remove the Advanced Water Filtration System from the Water Reservoir.
  2. Prepare 4 cups or 20 fl. oz. of undiluted, white household vinegar. Pour the vinegar into the Water Reservoir.
  3. Place an empty 10-12 cup basket-style paper filter or Mr. Coffee Reusable Coffee Filter (not included) into the Brew Basket and slide the brew basket into place.
  4. Place the empty Carafe on the unit, centered on the Drip Tray.
  5. Press SIZE to select 4 cups, press BREW NOW and brew prepared cleaning solution through the coffeemaker.
  6. After the brew cycle is complete, let stand for 30 minutes.
  7. Discard the cleaning solution and rinse the carafe thoroughly with clean water.
  8. Fill the Water Reservoir with 10 cups of clean, fresh water.
  9. Place the empty Carafe back on the coffeemaker, centered on the Drip Tray.
  10. Remove and discard the paper filter used during the cleaning cycle. If a Mr. Coffee Reusable Coffee Filter was used during cleaning, remove it and rinse it thoroughly before replacing it in the Brew Basket.
  11. Press BREW NOW and allow the full brew cycle to complete, rinsing the coffeemaker with hot water.
  12. Discard the water and rinse the Carafe thoroughly with clean water.
  13. Repeat steps 8 through 12 one more time, to ensure the coffeemaker is fully rinsed.

Cleaning Frequency

Type of Water Cleaning Frequency
Soft Water Every 80 Brew Cycles
Hard Water Every 40 Brew Cycles

Carafe Use and Care

Hard water can leave a white colored stain on the carafe and coffee may turn this stain brown. To remove Carafe Stains:

  1. Fill the Carafe with a solution of equal parts water and vinegar. Let the solution stand in the Carafe for approximately 20 minutes.
  2. Discard the solution, then wash and rinse the Carafe.

Do not use harsh abrasive cleaners that may scratch the Carafe.
