Ignition system service
Engine misfire or generally poor operation is often caused by spark
plugs
in poor
condition
or with
incorrect
spark
gap se
tting.
Always
clean
area
around
spark plugs before
removing
to pre
vent
dirt from
getting into engine
. Carefully
note spark plug
condi
tion
as this is often a good indicator of
t
he
igni

tion trouble.
Plugs fail
f
or various reasons
. The
por cel ain
insulator
may crack or become coated
with
oil, carbon or
other deposits.
This can
cause
the hi gh vol t age ign
i tion
impulse to pass from the center
electrode to ground
without
jumpUlg the spark gap
.
As an
engine operates,
th
e
electrodes are gradually
burned or worn away. In
t
ime , the gap becomes so wide
t
hat the
available
ignition voltage cannot jump
the gap and the engine mis ses .
Operation
is also greatly
affected
by breaker poi nt
condition
and adjustmen
t
of
point
gap.
I
f points
are burned or badly
oxidized,
l
i
ttle
or no
current
will
pass and as a result the engine may not operate
at
all
,
or if i
t
does run, it is likely to miss particularly at full
t
hr ot t l e .
SPARK PLUGS:
Ever y 100 hours remove
plugs,
check condition and reset gap or replace plug if needed.
Good operating conditions are indi ca t ed i
f
plug has light coating of gray or tan
deposit.
A dead white,
blistered coating could
indicate
overheating.
A black (carbon)
coating
may
indicate an "overrich" fuel
mixture caused by clogged
air
cleaner or improper
carburetor adjustment.
Do
not sandblast, wi r e bru sh ,
scrape or
otherwise
service plug in poor
condition--bes
t results
are obtained
with
new plug
.
