INTRODUCTION
5-2
Upon r e c e i p t of t h e power supply, the per-
formance c h e c k (Paragraph 5-1 1) should b e made.
This c h e c k
is
s u i t a b l e for incoming inspection. If
a f a u l t is d e t e c t e d i n the power supply w h i l e mak-
ing t h e performance c h e c k or during normal opera-
tion, proceed t o the troubleshooting procedures
(Paragraph 5-51).
After troubleshooting and repair
(Paragraph 5-59), perform a n y n e c e s s a r y adjust-
ments and c a l i b r a t i o n s (Paragraph 5-61).
Before
returning t h e power supply t o normal operation,
r e p e a t t h e performance c h e c k t o e n s u r e that the
f a u l t h a s been properly corrected and t h a t no other
f a u l t s e x i s t .
Before doing a n y maintenance
c h e c k s , turn-on power supply, allow a half-hour
warm-up, a n d read t h e general information regard-
ing measurement t e c h n i q u e s (Paragraph 5-6).

HIGH VOLTAGE PRECAUTIONS
5-4
W i t h the supply operating normally and
neither output grounded t o t h e c h a s s i s , there a r e
many high voltage points within t h e c h a s s i s t h a t
a r e dangerous t o personnel.
The potentials vary
from s e v e r a l hundred t o 3000 v o l t s a n d a r e depend-
e n t on the s e t t i n g of the VOLTAGE thumbwheel
s w i t c h e s .
Therefore, a l w a y s observe the follow-
ing caution:
CAUTION
Connect t h e p o s i t i v e output t o ground
( c h a s s i s ) before removing the c o v e r s
t o perform maintenance.

MEASUREMENT TECHNIQUES
5-7
All measurements s i v e n in t h i s manual a r e
w i t h a n e s a t i v e power supply output (positive ter-
minal arounded t o c h a s s i s ) . When measuring per-
formance of the power supply i t
is
important t h a t
the connection to the output terminal d o e s not in-
troduce additional r e s i s t a n c e .
For voltage meas-
urements, u s e a T-connector a t the negative output
terminal a n d c o n n e c t the l o a d t o one output of the
T-connector and the measuring device t o the other
output of the T-connector.
For current measure-
ments, c o n n e c t a four-terminal current monitoring
r e s i s t o r in s e r i e s w i t h the load r e s i s t o r and con-
n e c t both t o one output of the T-connector.
Con-
n e c t the measuring device a c r o s s the current mon-
iroring resistor.
5-8
When using a n o s c i l l o s c o p e , ground the c a s e
a t the same ground point a s the grounded terminal
of t h e power supply. Make certain t h a t t h e c a s e is
not a l s o grounded b y some other means (powercord).
Connect both o s c i l l o s c o p e input l e a d s t o the power
supply ground and c h e c k t h a t the o s c i l l o s c o p e is
not exhibiting a ripple or transient due t o ground
loops, pick-up or other means.
