6. Check, Mate and Draw
When the computer puts your king in check the CHECK light
w i l l come on. If a game ends in checkmate, the M A T E light
will be turned on as well (the W H I T E or B L A C K lights
indicate which side has been checkmated).
In case of a stalemate or draw by threefold repetition or f i f t y
move rule, the DRAW light will be turned on.
7. New Game
To start a new game press | N E W G A M E | when it is your t u r n
to move. New game does not affect the level setting. If
| M U L T I M O V E | or | D I S P L A Y M O V E | have been pressed, they
should be reset prior t o starting a new game.
8. Take Back
When it is your turn to move you may take back (erase) the
last computer move and your previous move. To do this press
| T A K E B A C K I . The computer w i l l show you where the
pieces came from and where you should replace them. The
Radio Shack 1850 can take back up t o 8 times.
9. Changing sides
If you wish t o change sides w i t h the computer you may do so
by pressing | P L A Y | instead of making your move. The
computer will play the next move for y o u and y o u can go on
playing for the other side.
Y o u can change sides as often as y o u like during the course of
a game. Y o u can even press | P L A Y | after every move and
make the computer play an entire game against itself. The
P L A Y ] key is also useful when y o u need help and want the
computer t o suggest a move for y o u .
If y o u want t o begin a game w i t h the black pieces, set up the
board w i t h the black pieces at the b o t t o m . Press | N E W G A M E ]
and | P L A Y | . The computer will make the first move for
white, playing down f r o m the t o p o f the board.
Note: White King is on square D8 and black King is o n square
D 1 .
10.
Interrupt
When the computer is computing a move you may interrupt it
by pressing [ P L A Y | . This w i l l cause i t t o stop computing and
play the best move it has found so far.
