INSTALLATION
1.
NO

Install the amplifier in a place free from direct sun-
light and heat from a stove, etc.
. Since the HA-M44 incorporates a large power out-
put amplifier, choose a well ventilated, moisture-
free place.
_ Install the amplifier on a stable and vibration-free
surface.
. When using an audio rack, leave spaces around the
components to allow the heat to dissipate.
.A tape deck being used may be susceptible to in-
duction from the amplifier, and there may be a hum
sound.
In such cases, instal! the tape deck in a |o-
cation where it will not be susceptible to the induc-
tion.
Do not place the tape deck on the amplifier since
this will impair the amplifier's and tape deck's per-
formance.
. Hum
may be induced
if other audio components
are brought
near the unit.
In cases
like this, in-
crease the distance, rearrange their positions and
make sure that the hum is not generated.

When
recording
a program
with the tape deck,
check that the tabs on the cassette tape have not
been broken
out and load the tape into the tape
deck.
. When
measuring
the power output or listening to
program sources with the 8 ohm load impedance,
do not drive the Model HA-M44 at full power for a
long period of time.
. When recording a broadcast or disk, adjusting the
unit's volume
control or bass and treble controls
has no effect on the sound which is recorded.
. Caution with copyrights when recording
The material which you record
may be used for
your own
personal entertainment as long as this
used does not infringe the copyrights of third par-
ties.
5. Protection circuit
(1)Thermal protection
Overheating will cause the unit's thermal protection
circuit to be activated resulting the sound shutting-
off. After a few minutes, the unit will automatically
switch on the sound
again.
If the sound
should
suddenly
shut-off
during
operation,
turn
off the
unit's power switch for 5 to 10 minutes and allow
the unit to cool then switch the unit back on. If the
unit functions normally after this, it may mean that
heat from the unit may not be dissipating properly.
In this case you should provide a greater clearance
around the unit or operate the unit at a lower vo-
lume setting.
(2)Protection for power transistors and speakers
This unit has a circuit that protects the power tran-
sistors and speakers.
When
an error is detected
and the protection circuit is activated, the function
indicators will light repeatedly in the sequence of
TAPE-2

for about 3 minutes and then finally only
the RECORDING indicator will remain lit. When this
occurs, imediately turn off the power switch and
check the point below.
If the problem is not reme-
died, contact your dealer or nearest HITACHI Ser-
vice Station.
(*) Check all speaker leads to insure they have been
properly connected
and there are no shorts.
After
the
connections
have
been
checked,
turn
the
power switch back on and check if the function in-
dicators are behaving normally.
OPERATION
m@ CONTROLS, SWITCHES AND TERMINALS
@ POWER switch
The HA-M44 contains a muting circuit, and it takes
about 3 — 5 seconds
until this amplifier reaches
stable
operation,
after the switch
is turned
ON
(=).
@ Power level indicator
Ten LEDs for each channel light up to show the
power output.
NOTE:
When the impedance of the speakers is 8
ohms, the level of the indicators expresses
the power output in watts.
AD) te
@ MONITOR LOCK switch (TAPE-2)
At its ON (4) position top priority is given to the
TAPE-2
input regardless of the operation
of the
other Function switches @. At the OFF ( £1) posi-
tion the SOURCE
and TAPE-2 signals can be se-
lected
in accordance
with the operation
of the
TAPE-2 switch or the other Function switches @.
NOTE:
No sound will be heard if this switch is set
to ON (2) when no equipment has been
connected to the TAPE-2 jacks.
