Starting & Stopping
Engine warm-up
This is a low emissions engine which operates differently from
previously built engines. It is designed for maximum performance
and life if operated with the throttle fully open (in FAST).
The engine requires a warm-up period of several seconds to
several minutes, depending on the temperature.
To obtain best starting results
Store and fuel lawn mower in level position.
Start lawn mower on hard surface or over previously cut grass.
Do not use a pressurized starting fluid. Starting fluid is
flammable. Severe engine damage or fire may occur.
Periodically remove grass build-up under mower
deck. Remove spark plug wire before removing grass.
When tipping lawn mower to remove grass, keep
spark plug side of engine up.
Control handles
Equipment may have safety brake control handle and/
or traction control handle as well as steering handle.
Operate control handle(s) as follows or as equipment
manufacturer recommends.
Engage when starting engine.
Typical safety brake
control handle
Before starting engine
Open fuel shut-off valve 1/4 turn,
if equipped.
Primer equipped engine
Move throttle control to FAST. Push
primer bulb firmly 3 times before starting
engine. (If engine stopped because it ran
out of fuel, refuel engine and push primer
bulb 3 times.)
Note: Priming is usually unnecessary
when restarting a warm engine.
However, cool weather may require
priming to be repeated.
Choke equipped engine
Move throttle control to FAST
position. Push choke lever to full
CHOKE position. (This is a
5-position choke.) When the en-
gine starts, gradually move choke
lever from one position to the next
until it is in full RUN position.
In the USA and Canada, a 24 hour hot line, 1-800-233-3723, has a menu of pre-recorded messages offering you engine maintenance information.
Do not engage until
ready to use equipment.

Start engine
Always keep hands and feet clear of mower blade or
other rotating machinery.
Rewind starter
Grasp rope handle as illustrated and pull slowly until
resistance is felt. Then pull cord rapidly to overcome
compression, prevent kickback and start engine.
Operate engine throttle control in FAST position.
Rewind starter
with typical safety control
Electric starter, if equipped
Turn key to START. Operate engine in FAST position.
Note: If equipment manufacturer has supplied battery, charge it
before trying to start engine, as equipment manufacturer recom-
mends. Use short starting cycles (15 secs. per min.) to prolong
starter life. Extended cranking can damage starter motor.
Typical electric starter
Stop engine
Move throttle control to SLOW position. Then release safety
brake control handle or move throttle control to STOP or turn
key to OFF, depending on how equipped.
Always remove key from switch, if equipped, when equipment
is not in use or left unattended.
Typical stop switches
When engine is transported, close fuel shut-off valve
(if engine is equipped) to prevent fuel leakage.
