With a little care and proper use of the equipment, you can work comfortably throughout the day. Using the computer keyboard incorrectly can result in discomfort and possible injury.
  • Page 28 Use only the AC adapter supplied with your computer or an equivalent adapter that is compatible. Use of any incompatible adapter could damage your computer. Toshiba assumes no liability for any damage caused by use of an incompatible adapter. When you connect the AC adapter to the computer, always follow the steps in the exact order as described in the User's Manual.

  • Page 31 Installing additional memory (optional) Do not install or remove a memory module while the DVD-ROM or multi-function drive power is on. You need a standard Phillips no. 0 (zero) screwdriver and a small flat-head screwdriver to install a memory module. To avoid damaging the computer’s screws, use a standard Phillips no.
  • Page 32 Installing additional memory (optional) You can pry off the panel by using a flat-head screwdriver. Starting at the left or right side, carefully wedge the flat-head screwdriver between the panel and the surrounding housing. Grasp the end of the panel and lift up until the panel comes free. Remove the three screws that hold the keyboard in place, and remove the keyboard retaining brace.

Covered memory module slots Locating the covered memory module slots Lift (but don’t detach) the plastic sheet to expose the memory slots. Lifting the plastic covering the memory slots Remove the new memory module from its antistatic packaging.
  • Page 35 Installing additional memory (optional) Avoid touching the connectors on the memory module or on the computer. Grease or dust on the connectors may cause memory access problems. Insert the memory module in a slot. After ensuring the cutout in the module aligns with the tab in the memory module slot, gently press the module down into place.
  • Page 36 Installing additional memory (optional) 13 If the computer does not recognize the memory, shut down the computer, remove the keyboard and make sure the memory module is seated properly, as described in step 7. Removing a memory module If you use the computer for a long time, the memory modules will become hot.
  • Page 37 Your computer’s TFT display Carefully remove the module from the slot. Static electricity can damage the memory module. Before you handle the module, touch a grounded metal surface to discharge any static electricity you may have built up. To avoid damaging the memory module, be careful not to touch its pin connector (on the side you insert into the computer).

Failure to do so may result in damage to components, such as cables, attached to your computer, or to the computer itself. Before you insert a PC Card, refer to the documentation that comes with the card to see if you need to do anything before you insert it.
  • Page 39 Inserting an SD card Inserting an SD card The SD card slot is available on selected models only. MMC cards (multimedia cards) do not work in this slot. Turn the card so that the metal contacts are face down. Push the card into the slot until it locks in place. Removing an SD card The SD card slot is available on selected models only.
  • Page 40 A blue circle within the TOSHIBA Touch and Launch window represents your finger location on the TouchPad. As you move the blue circle over an icon in the TOSHIBA Touch and Launch window, the icon is highlighted. Release your finger from a selected icon to choose the icon's function.
  • Page 41 Playing a CD or DVD Playing a CD or DVD Your computer has a DVD-ROM or multi-function drive that can read both DVD-ROM and CD-ROM discs. Digital versatile discs (DVDs) provide a significant increase in data storage and support features that are not available on any other video platform. These features include wide-screen movies, multiple language tracks, digital surround sound, multiple camera angles, and interactive menus.
  • Page 42 Playing a CD or DVD The manual eject button allows you to manually open the disc tray when power to the computer and the drive is off. Never use a pencil to press the manual eject button. Pencil lead can break off inside the computer and damage it.
  • Page 43 Playing a CD or DVD Do not install or remove a memory module while the DVD-ROM or multi- function drive power is on. Inserting a disc Before playing an audio CD or a DVD, turn down the volume. Playing the disc at maximum volume could damage your ears.
  • Page 44 Playing a CD or DVD Carefully place the disc in the empty tray with its label facing up. Inserting a disc Be careful not to touch the drive’s lens (located underneath the drive’s spindle) or the area around it. Doing so could cause the drive to malfunction. Gently press the center of the disc onto the spindle until it locks.
  • Page 45 Moving the computer Removing a disc with the computer off Insert a slender object, such as a straightened paper clip, into the manual eject button access hole. Never use a pencil to press the manual eject button. Pencil lead can break off inside the computer and damage it.

  • Page 47 Mobile computing Changing the main battery When your battery power is running low, you have two options: connect the computer to an AC power source or install a charged battery. When handling a battery, be careful not to drop it or short-circuit its terminals.

  • Page 49 ❖ To replace the main battery, use an identical battery that you can purchase through toshiba.com ❖ A reverse polarity condition should be avoided with all batteries. The main battery is designed so that it cannot be installed to cause reverse polarity.

Important information about your CPU cooling fan The round cooling fan on the underside of your computer keeps the central processing unit at a temperature suitable for optimum performance by drawing outside air into the computer.
  • Page 51 If something goes wrong To prevent possible overheating of the CPU, make sure the cooling fan's air intake is not blocked. The fan draws in air by creating a vacuum. If the fan is blocked, it could cause the CPU to run at a lower performance level or cause the computer to shut down.
  • Page 52 If something goes wrong Problems when you turn on the computer These problems may occur when you turn on the power. The computer will not start. Make sure you attached the AC adapter and power cable properly or installed a charged battery. Press and hold down the power button until the on/off light changes to green.

Your display contains an extremely large number of thin-film transistors (TFT) and is manufactured using high-precision technology. The small bright dots that appear on your display are an intrinsic characteristic of the TFT manufacturing technology.
