Research shows that light therapy is very safe. However, please check with your doctor first if any of the following apply:
A few people experience side effects but these are generally mild (including headaches, eye strain, nausea and hyperactivity) and can usually be solved simply by switching off the light. Over the next few days, gradually build up the time you spend in front of it to find a treatment time that works best for you.
Some people complain of difficulty sleeping and often this is down to using the light too close to bedtime.
If you have any problems while using Zest, or if you've been using the light for a week but haven't noticed any benefit, please contact Lumie or speak to your doctor.
the guidelines in this leaflet are not medical directions for treating any condition. If your doctor has suggested using light therapy, follow their instructions and discuss any effects with them.
Lumie Zest combines two functions in one convenient product: a wakeup light with a sunrise alarm to wake you naturally, and a SAD and energy light, to provide you with the bright light your body needs in the dark winter months.
Its compact design makes it suitable for use at home, in the office or to take with you when you're travelling.
Wake-up light
Lumie Zest wakes you with a sunrise that naturally helps to regulate your sleep and wake patterns. You'll wake up in a better mood, find it easier to get up and feel more energetic during the day.
Ideally, you should use the wake-up light all year round to help keep your sleep and wake cycles on track.
In clinical trials, 'dawn simulators' such as Zest have been shown to improve mood, energy, productivity and the quality of sleep and awakening. They can also help sufferers of SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) and winter blues cope with dark winter mornings.
SAD and energy light
Zest's light therapy function will provide you with the bright light your body needs during the dark winter months. It can help to boost your energy levels, put you in a better mood and make you feel more awake. Light therapy is safe and is proven to help alleviate the winter blues and SAD.
Our circadian rhythms are strongly influenced by light and the short wavelengths around the blue part of the spectrum are known to be particularly important. Because the white LEDs used in Zest are rich in blue light, they offer an effective alternative to the white fluorescent tubes used in larger lightboxes.

Please read these instructions carefully to get the most out of your Zest.
Features
Zest is supplied with some recommended settings for getting started; all you need do is set the current time and the time you want to wake up.
The default settings are:
Here's how to set up your Zest for the first time.
To set the time
You will then be prompted to enter the essential settings:
Display shows (for example) | What you do |
![]() | Use ![]() ![]() |
![]() | Use ![]() ![]() |
![]() | At this stage you can ignore the remaining options. Wait 1 seconds for the normal display. |
You're now ready to use Zest as a wake-up light or as a SAD and energy light.
To position Zest
Position Zest near the head of your bed. The ideal place is on a bedside table, at arm's length, near a power socket.
To activate the wake-up light
When you're ready to go to sleep you need to explicitly activate the wake-up light for the following morning. This also dims the display, if you've selected this option; see Wake-up light options.
The light fades off and the display briefly confirms the wake-up time; for example:
It then shows the current time, with the alarm symbol to show that the alarm is set; for example:
You'll be woken up with a gradual sunrise followed by an audible alarm if you chose one.
To snooze
This gives you another nine minutes before the sunrise (and alarm sound, if you've chosen one) is repeated.
To cancel the alarm sound
To turn off the light
When the alarm is off:
To dim the display WITHOUT activating the wake-up light
If you don't need to be woken by the sunrise (or alarm sound) – for example, at the weekend – you can still dim the display at bedtime:
When to start light therapy
Start light therapy as soon as you feel the early signs of winter blues or SAD – often in September or October – if you start to feel lethargic, anxious or irritable. You should notice positive benefits after using Zest for three or four days in a row.
Use light therapy every day, but if the weather is bright you may feel you can skip a day. As spring comes around you will probably start to cut back your light therapy; your body will tell you if it's too soon and if you notice your symptoms returning simply use your Zest again for a few days.
Light therapy is proven to put you in a better mood, to boost alertness and to help you feel more awake so Zest is ideal for use at work. Use it wherever and whenever you need to restore concentration and give yourself a mental boost.
What time of day?
If you're using Zest to help with the winter blues or SAD, bright light in the morning has been shown to be most effective.
If you feel lethargic in the afternoon, or fall asleep too early, use Zest in the late afternoon/early evening.
It's best to avoid bright light too close to bedtime - within about three hours - as you may find it difficult to get to sleep.
Once you've found a pattern that's right for you, try to use it around the same time every day.
What settings?
If you use Zest at about 50 cm/0 in, as suggested, then a 0-minute light therapy session at 100% brightness is the recommended standard for effective SAD treatment. If you're more comfortable with the light at less than maximum brightness then the length of your session is automatically adjusted to ensure you benefit from your light therapy.
The following table shows the alternative combinations of brightness setting and session duration:
Brightness setting | ![]() | ![]() | ![]() | ![]() | ![]() |
Session duration | ![]() | ![]() | ![]() | ![]() | ![]() |
Note: If you find yours eyes ache slightly, try reducing the brightness or switch off for a while.
To position Zest
You can use Zest whilst you're on the computer, when you're watching TV, at mealtimes, etc. Dark glasses, tinted lenses or closing your eyes will all limit the effects of light therapy.
To start a light therapy session
To pause a light therapy session
If you want to take a short break from a session:
The light fades off and the display flashes the number of minutes remaining; for example:
The timer pauses to ensure you receive the correct length of therapy.
To resume:
Additional light therapy
If you feel the need for additional light therapy at any time you can turn on the light for as long as you want. This feature is also available in wake-up light mode.
This section summarises the options available to let you customise the wake-up light.
To check a setting
If you're not in wake-up light mode:

When the setting you want is shown:
The following table explains the meaning of each setting:

When the setting you want is shown:
The following table explains the meaning of each setting:
Default display | What it sets | Options |
![]() | Light therapy brightness. | 0%, 0%, 60%, 80% or 100% |
![]() | Timed light therapy session duration. | 01 to 99 minutes |
Changing either of these settings automatically adjusts the other; see What settings?.
I tried out the sunrise but the light comes up really quickly – what's wrong?
You probably didn't allow enough time for a full sunrise. For example, the default sunrise takes 30 minutes so if the clock shows the time as 11:00 then you need to set the wake-up time to at least 11:30.
What happens when I unplug my Zest or there's a power cut?
Your Zest keeps time for 30 minutes; other settings are permanent, so you won't need to reprogram the unit, just plug it back in. If you need to adjust the time, see Current time in Wake-up light options,
The display panel is too bright when I'm trying to sleep; how can I change it?
See Display brightness in Wake-up light options,
Turn off the power at the mains. Press and hold menu as you turn the power back on. Release the button when the software version number is displayed.
Clean only with a dry or lightly moistened cloth. Always unplug the unit first and let it cool if necessary.
Replacement mains power adaptors are available from Lumie.
