If you have, for example, a Newtonian, Maksutov, Ritchey-Chretien or Schmidt- Cassegrain telescope, the light and heat filtering must take place in front of the light entrance aperture. In the past, plane-parallel glass solar filters were used for this purpose, but these have largely been replaced by the inexpensive BAADER AstroSolar film.
