Firefighting measures

water, but with sand or a powder extinguisher, for
example.
- The electrolyte solution is usually flammable.
Electrolyte solution leaked from a lithium-ion
battery can be washed off with water, far from the
battery.
- In most cases, when there is a fire, the only option
is to extinguish consequential fires and let the
battery burn out in a controlled manner.
- Therefore a leaky battery must immediately be
removed from the vicinity of a fire.
- If a battery catches on fire: Never touch it with your
hands.
- Immediately remove all flammable objects that are
within a 2.5 m radius, especially other batteries.
- Use tongs or a shovel to take the burning battery
outside to a location where there is nothing
flammable within a 2.5 m radius. Then set it down
and allow it to burn out under constant surveillance.
When you do so, make sure you stay on the
windward side of the fire. This prevents one from
inhaling fumes, and the flames won't contact the
face. Afterward, dispose of the remains of the
battery.
- If a fire breaks out at the storage site, there is
danger of other batteries catching fire. Therefore
extinguish the fire immediately, but only with the
special Class D fire extinguisher on site.
- Take the burnt battery outside, as previously
described, ignite it, and let it burn out.
