Excessive Oil Consumption

Possible Cause
External Leak
Excessive Oil in Crankcase
Oil/Fuel Dilution
Extended Excessive RPM's
Incorrect Oil Viscosity
Engine Vents Blocked
Defective Piston Rings
Defective Cylinders
Excessive Bearing Clearance
The Amount of Oil Used is Greatly Dependent Upon Engine Speed. Oil Usage Will be Greater at Higher RPM's.
Engine Overheating - Verify if Engine is Actually Overheating
Possible Cause
Low Coolant Level
Clogged Sea Water Intake
Clogged Sea Water Strainer
Loose Hose Connections
Sea Water Hose Kinked or Collapsed
Obstruction in Cooling System
Sea Water Pump Impeller Worn
Antifreeze Not Properly Mixed
Heat Exchanger Core Plugged
Alternator Drive Belt Broken

Remedy
Clean/Check/Repair
Remove Excess Oil. Refer to Engine Identification on Page 15 for Correct Oil Level
Change Oil
Reduce RPM's
Change to Proper Oil
Unblock Vents

Remedy
Add Coolant. Refer to Bleeding Procedure if Coolant was Low or Not Flowing into Tank
Clear Intake. Ensure That All Hoses After the Intake are Clear
Clean Sea Strainer
Check and Tighten Clamps
Verify Hose Routing and Condition
Verify that Engine/Transmission Oil Cooler is not Clogged with Debris
Replace
Mix to a 50/50 Ratio
Verify that Engine Heat Exchanger Ends are not Clogged
Replace
