LRAD 450XL GENASYS INC. 1.0 Important Safety Information The LRAD-450XL is capable of producing sound pressure levels that have the potential to cause temporary or permanent hearing damage if not used properly. Always follow the safety precautions described in this manual as well as on the unit’s operator interfaces. -

LRAD 450XL GENASYS INC. 1.1 Acoustic Volume Levels The LRAD-450XL acoustic device is capable of producing a maximum continuous sound pressure level (SPL) of 145 dB in order to achieve adequate communications over long distances. The sound pressure levels achieved at full volume at distances of 40 meters or less may cause hearing damage if people are exposed to these for long periods of time. -

The LRAD-450XL system ships in a reusable hard case. The provided case should be stored and used whenever shipping or transporting the LRAD. Spare crates can be ordered from Genasys Inc. Remove the six hex-head screws and flat washers (Items 1 and 2) from the Side Support Plate (Item 4) on the bottom of the LRAD head unit. - Page 16 LRAD 450XL GENASYS INC. 3. The stud at the bottom of the Pan-Tilt Head will fit into the Medium Duty Tripod (118067- 00) (sold separately) or the Pole Mount (106664-00) (also sold separately). 4. Adjust the tilt position of the LRAD by loosening the Tilt Friction Adjustment Knob and tilting the unit using the handle.

LRAD 450XL GENASYS INC. 1. The Pole Mount can be used to attach the LRAD to poles from 2" to 6" in diameter. 2. Affix Pole Mount Weldment (Item 1) using the two Pipe Clamps (Item 2) and the hardware items provided (Items 3 to 6). -

LRAD 450XL GENASYS INC. The Control Module is preloaded with a number of warning and test messages that may be freely used or deleted as needed. The figures below show the main elements of the Control Modules. A sealed, ruggedized package houses an MP3 player capable of playing audio in MP3, WAV and WMA formats. -

LRAD 450XL GENASYS INC. 5.1.1 MIC/USB Connection The MIC/USB connector allows connection of the microphone or another accessory device such as a Phraselator, a CD player, or a commercial audio device, such as the iPod. Audio played from an external device using this connection will be mixed with any audio being played through the LRAD’s Control Module: it will not override any other audio being played. -

LRAD 450XL GENASYS INC. 5.1.2 Audio Out Connection The LRAD Control Interface connector is provided for connection to the LRAD’s head unit with the provided interface cable. This connection allows remote power on/off and volume functions. It also is used to transmit audio from the Control Module to the Amplifier Module. -

Status: The Control Module status will display one of the following: PLAY – The selected audio file is under playback and should be heard through the LRAD depending on the LRAD’s volume setting. PAUSE – The selected file is paused and will resume playback when the PLAY/PAUSE button is pressed from the point in the file at which it was paused. -

LRAD 450XL GENASYS INC. 5.4 Downloading Files In order to load additional audio files to the Control Module, it must be connected to the USB port of a USB enabled computer. First connect the USB download cable to the MIC/USB connector on the Control Module, then connect the USB plug into the computer. -
Page 25: Audio File Playback
Tone is an intense pulsating warning tone that is designed to be clearly heard at long distances. Genasys Inc. recommends using the tone in 2-5 second bursts for maximum effectiveness when hailing a subject. Pressing the ALERT TONE button will interrupt the recorded voice transmission. -

LRAD 450XL GENASYS INC. 6.0 Recording Audio Files Using LRAD Normalizer Software The LRAD-450XL ships with a CD-ROM that contains LRAD Normalizer software. This software can be used on a Windows based PC to record optimized audio files that will enable you to get optimal acoustic performance when playing these recordings on the LRAD-450XL. -

LRAD 450XL GENASYS INC. 1.) Recording and playback controls: This section of the interface allows the user to record a new audio file using the PC’s built in microphone. It also allows the user to playback the original Recorded Audio and the Normalized Audio file that is automatically created after a recording is made. -

LRAD 450XL GENASYS INC. 11. The Normalized Output File should have the following characteristics: a. Silence is removed from the beginning and end of the recording. This allows for the audio to start up quickly after the PLAY button is pressed on the MP3 player used with the LRAD. -

LRAD 450XL GENASYS INC. 7.0 The Recording Microphone The LRAD-450XL comes with a recording microphone. This microphone features an integrated digital recording chip that can store approximately one minute of audio. This feature is extremely useful in situations in which a message needs to be recorded quickly for repeated continuous use, or when feedback cannot be avoided when talking through the microphone. -

LRAD 450XL GENASYS INC. 8.0 Operating Instructions The following instructions offer a brief overview of the operation of the LRAD once it has been mounted, connected, and powered up. Operators of the LRAD must wear hearing protection with 20 to 33 dB of attenuation when using the LRAD. -

LRAD 450XL GENASYS INC. • When choosing a placement area to maximize unobstructed transmission path(s), care must be taken to ensure the LRAD-450XL does not collide with any structures or equipment, nor encroach on personnel passageways when the unit is pivoted and manipulated through its full range of motion. -

LRAD 450XL GENASYS INC. • Check the electrical connection to DC input power cable to ensure that power is present and connected. • Check the inline fuse on the DC input power cable. • Press the resettable breaker. • Ensure that the system is not overheating due to exposure to radiating heat sources. If the system has overheated, it will resume functioning after it has been allowed to cool down for ten or fifteen minutes. -

LRAD 450XL GENASYS INC. • Connect the Control Module to a computer using the USB interface cable. If it powers up with this connection, it is possible that the Control Module cable is damaged or there is damage to the Audio Out connector on the Control Module. -

LRAD 450XL GENASYS INC. • Try connecting to a different USB port on the computer. Some systems such as laptops with docking stations and USB hubs may give intermittent USB device recognition errors. 11.0 System Tests The following tests may be performed periodically to verify system performance and integrity. -

LRAD 450XL GENASYS INC. 11.2 Amplifier Output Voltage Test Figure 23: Amplifier Module The Amplifier Module has two independent amplifier outputs, each powering one of the drivers in the Head Unit. It is possible that one or more of the outputs may become degraded or non- functional. -
