Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Spotlight
Virtual Switching System 1440
The key enabler of a VSS 1440 is the Virtual
Switching Supervisor 720-10G. Any two Cisco
Catalyst 6500 Series Switches with this supervisor
engine can be pooled together into a VSS 1440*.
The two switches are connected with 10 GbE links
called Virtual Switch Links (VSLs). Once a VSS
1440 is created it acts as a single virtual Cisco
Catalyst 6500 switch delivering the following
benefits:
Operational Manageability:
Two Catalyst 6500s shares a single point of
management, single gateway IP address,
and single routing instance—eliminating the
dependence on First Hop Redundancy Protocols
(FHRP) and Spanning Tree Protocol
Non-Stop Communications:
Delivers deterministic, sub-200 millisecond layer 2
link recovery through inter-chassis stateful failovers
and the predictable resilience of Etherchannel
Scales to 1.4 Tbps:
Scales system bandwidth capacity to 1.4 Tbps by
activating all available bandwidth across redundant
Catalyst 6500 switches and delivers up to 260
ports of 10 GbE per system

Accelerator (PISA)
The Cisco Catalyst 6500 Supervisor Engine 32
Programmable Intelligent Services Accelerator
(PISA) embeds multi-gigabit deep packet
inspection capability into the Catalyst 6500 Series
platform. This enables hardware acceleration
of services and offers new levels of application
intelligence, integrated security, and operational
manageability for enterprise campus access and
WAN routing.

Cisco IOS Software Modularity
The Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series with Cisco
IOS Software Modularity boosts operational
efficiency and minimizes downtime through
evolutionary software infrastructure advancements.
By enabling modular Cisco IOS subsystems to
run as independent, self-healing processes,
this innovation minimizes unplanned downtime
through fault containment and stateful process
restarts, simplifies software changes through
subsystem In-Service Software Upgrades (ISSU),
and enables process-level, automated policy
control by integrating the Embedded Event
Manager (EEM).
Maximum PoE Scalability
The Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series provides industry
leading levels of power scalability (up to 420 Class
3 devices) needed to support high-density PoE
deployments. It also offers Enhanced Power over
Ethernet (ePoE) for devices that require more than
15.4 Watts per port. The enhanced 6- and 9-slot
chassis (WS-C6506-E and WS-C6509-E models)
are designed to scale beyond the current 8700W
power supplies. Continuing this product line's
tradition of unmatched investment protection,
all existing supervisors, line cards, switch fabrics,
and software releases are supported in the
E series chassis.
Metro Ethernet 6500
The ME 6500 offers high services in a fixed 1.5 RU
form factor. It is optimized for space constrained
branch collapsed core/distribution GE LAN
aggregation.
The Cisco ME 6524 Ethernet Switch delivers
advanced Catalyst 6500 features and services
such as IOS modularity, MPLS, QoS, Multicast,
and IPv6 features in a small fixed form factor
enabling service-rich Gigabit Ethernet LAN
aggregation in branch deployments.
