Cisco Optics
Cisco Optics
Cisco offers a wide variety of pluggable transceiver modules across Cisco
switches and router platforms. Cisco pluggable transceivers provide a convenient
and cost-effective solution for the adoption of Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet,
and 10 Gigabit Ethernet in data center, campus, metro access, and storage area
networks.
Cisco 10 Gigabit Modules
Cisco offers a range of XENPAK, X2, and XFP modules for 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) deployments.
These Cisco transceivers meet Cisco specifications and are compliant with industry standards. Cisco
XENPAK, X2, and XFP offer a convenient and cost-effective solution for the adoption of 10GbE in data
center, campus, metropolitan area access, and ring networks. XENPAKs are offered for several reaches and
transmission media and are supported on the Catalyst 6500, 3750 Series switches, and Cisco 7600 and
CRS-1 routers today.
X2s are also offered for several reaches and transmission media and are supported on the Catalyst 4500,
4948-10GE, 3750-E and 3560-E Series switches today. The Cisco XFP Module offers customers a dual rate
interface for 10GbE and Packet-over-SONET/SDH (POS) connectivity. XFPs are currently supported on
Cisco routers based on Shared Port Adapter (SPA)
Cisco Gigabit Ethernet SFP Modules
Cisco offers a range of GBIC transceivers and Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) transceivers for Gigabit
Ethernet and Fibre Channel applications. These small, modular optical interface transceivers offer a
convenient and cost-effective solution for the adoption of Gigabit Ethernet and Fibre Channel in data
center, campus, metropolitan area access and ring networks, and storage area networks.
Cisco Fast Ethernet SFP Modules
Cisco offers a range of Fast Ethernet SFP Interface
Transceivers. The product portfolio includes
100BASE-FX 100BASE-LX, and 100BASE-BX SFPs.
• 100BASE-FX: SFP operates on ordinary multimode
fiber optic link spans of up to 2 km in length.
• 100BASE-LX: SFP operates on ordinary single-
mode fiber optic link spans of up to 10 km in
length.
• 100BASE-BX: SFP operates on ordinary single-
mode SINGLE STRAND fiber optic link spans
of up to 10 km in length. A 100BASE-BX-D and
a 100BASE-BX-U SFP is needed for the single
strand deployment.

Cisco offers four types of 100M SFP:
• 100M SFP for Fast Ethernet (FE) SFP Port.
The SFP product name contains "FE".
• 100M SFP for Gigabit Ethernet SFP Port.
The SFP product name contains "GE".
Cisco CWDM Modules
Cisco Course Wave Division Multiplexing (CWDM) Solution allows scalable and easy-to-deploy Gigabit
Ethernet (GbE) and Fibre Channel services. The combination of CWDM GBICs and CWDM SFPs and
CWDM Optical Add-Drop Modules (OADMs) and Multiplexers enables the design of a flexible and highly
available multiservice network.
The Cisco CWDM Solution offers a convenient and cost-effective solution for the adoption of optical
Gigabit Ethernet in campus, data center, and metropolitan-area access networks. Cisco CWDM Solution
consists of a set of eight different Cisco CWDM GBICs (one for each of the eight different colors or
wavelengths), eight different SFPs, a set of eight single wavelength/dual channel OADMs, two four-channel
OADM/Multiplexer and an eight-channel Multiplexer along with a CWDM rack-mountable chassis.
Cisco DWDM Transceiver Modules
The Cisco Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) XENPAKs allow users to integrate WDM transport
directly with Cisco 10GbE switches and routers. The DWDM XENPAKs and DWDM optical filter and amplifier
products (Cisco ONS15216 series) enable the design of a flexible and highly available multiservice network.
The DWDM XENPAKs support 100GHZ ITU grid and match the 4-skip-1 channel plan of Cisco ONS 100GHZ
products. The DWDM XENPAKs can be used for unamplified and amplified designs to transmit up to 320
Gigabits over the same pair of SMF.
The Cisco Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) GBICs allow users to integrate WDM transport directly
with Cisco Gigabit Ethernet switches and routers. Just like DWDM XENPAK, the DWDM GBICs interoperate
with the same ONS equipment. They can be used for unamplified and amplified designs to transmit up to
32 Gigabits over the same pair of SMF.
