Unlike A and P modes where exposure readings occur only the moment the
Shutter Release is depressed halfway (locking the measurement), the

function operates continuously for up to ten seconds in M mode when
either Up/Down button is pressed, turning it on.
Exposure conditions can be monitored in the Finder via the steady red "

" indicating metered over- or underexposure. When simultaneously lit,
the set shutter speed matches the metered value.
Depress and hold the Shutter Release halfway down, then press either of the
Up/Down buttons to instantly input the metered exposure value. " – – – " is
