Please read these operating instructions carefully prior to
operating the unit and keep them for later reference.
1 Applications
The quick charger RBC-1AA serves for charging up to 17
NiCd or NiMH rechargeable batteries of size AA. It offers
7 independently controlled charging circuits with 1 to 4
batteries. After each charging process the unit is auto-
matically switched to trickle charging. This switching oc-
curs after reaching the maximum battery voltage (PVD
= peak voltage detection), when the rechargeable batteries
are heated up very much (> 50 °C), or when reaching the
maximum charging time.
2 Safety Notes
The battery charger corresponds to all required directives
of the EU and is therefore marked with .
WARNING This unit is supplied with hazardous
mains voltage (230 V~). Leave servicing
to skilled personnel only. Do not insert
anything into the air vents! Inexpert hand-
ling or modification of the unit may cause
an electric shock hazard.
It is essential to observe the following items:
With this unit only charge NiCd or NiMH rechargeable

batteries suitable for quick charging. Non-rechargeable
batteries may leak or explode when trying to charge
them!
The unit is suitable for indoor use only. Protect it against
G
dripping water and splash water, high air humidity, and
heat (admissible ambient temperature range 0 – 40 °C).
Do not place any vessels filled with liquid, e. g. drinking
G
glasses, on the unit.

The heat being generated in the unit must be carried
G
off by air circulation. Therefore, the air vents at the
housing must not be covered.
Do not set the unit into operation, or immediately dis-
G
connect the mains plug from the mains socket if
1. there is visible damage to the unit or to the mains
cable,
2. a defect might have occurred after a drop or similar
accident,
3. malfunctions occur.
The unit must in any case be repaired by skilled per-
sonnel.
Never pull the mains cable to disconnect the mains
G
plug from the mains socket, always seize the plug.
For cleaning only use a dry, soft cloth, never use chem-
G
icals or water.
No guarantee claims for the unit and no liability for any
G
resulting personal damage or material damage will be
accepted if the unit is used for other purposes than orig-
inally intended, if it is not correctly connected or oper-
ated, or not repaired in an expert way.
If the unit is to be put out of operation defini -
tively, take it to a local recycling plant for a dis-
posal which is not harmful to the environment.
Do not put defective batteries into the household rub-
bish but take them to a special waste disposal (e. g. col-
lective container at your retailer).

3 Setting-up and Connection
The unit is provided for insertion into a rack (482 mm/19")
but it can also be used as a tabletop unit. In each case air
must be allowed to flow through the air vents without ob-
struction to ensure sufficient cooling. For rack mounting
1 rs (rack space) = 44.45 mm is required. For ventilation,
additional space should be provided above and below the
unit.
Connect the supplied mains cable to the mains jack (5)
and connect the plug to a socket (230 V~/50 Hz).

4 Operation

The RBC-1AA offers 2 charging circuits for 4 batteries (2),
4 charging circuits for 2 batteries [2 charging circuits each
per compartment (3)] and one for a single battery (4).
A charging circuit must always be completely loaded:
always insert four batteries into the 4-battery compart-
ments (2), always insert complete pairs into the compart-
ments (3) with 2 charging circuits (into the two left places
and/or the two right places).
For a uniform charge the batteries of a charging circuit
should be of the same type, capacity and charging state,
i. e. they should come from the same consumer, if possible.
1) Switch on the unit with the POWER switch (6).
2) To charge a single battery, open the cover of the com-
partment (4) [ fig. 3]. Insert the battery so that the
positive pole is visible and close the cover again.
To charge 2 or 4 batteries, open a corresponding
compartment (2, 3) [ fig. 4]. Extract the trays by
means of the supplied grabber. Insert the batteries to
be charged as indicated in the tray and push in the tray
until it locks into place on both sides.
3) An LED (1) shows the operating state for each charg-
ing circuit:
LED lights up:
Quick charging, charging current = 1.2 A

LED extinguished:
Quick charging terminated (battery full), trickle
charging with pulsed current
or compartment empty
or charging circuit not completely loaded
LED flashes regularly:
Quick charging by pulsed charging current is being
prepared (e. g. for batteries of deep discharge or
when overheated batteries are inserted); if the unit
is not switched to quick charging even after a longer
time, the battery (or one of the batteries) is probably
defective.
4) After the charging process remove the full batteries.
(Due to switching to trickle charging the batteries can
also remain in the compartment without being over-
charged.)
The required charging time depends on the capacity and
the charging state of a battery. For discharged batteries
with a capacity of 2.4 Ah the charging time is approx.
2 hours. If the charging process is started with a fully
charged battery, the unit is switched to trickle charging
after approx. 10 minutes.
