    This manual tells how to set up and begin using your TOSHIBA L550/ L550D/L555/L555D computer. It also provides detailed information on configuring your computer, basic operations and care, using optional devices and troubleshooting.

This difference in brightness levels is intended to save power when operating on batteries.

    L550/L550D/L555/L555D Optical disc drives The computer is configured with a DVD Super Multi drive or BD writer drive. A Serial ATA interface controller is used for 12cm (4.72") and 8cm (3.15") CD/DVD/BD operation. When the computer is accessing a CD/DVD/BD, an indicator on the drive glows.
  • Page 52 Writable discs This section describes the types of writable CD/DVD/BD discs. Check the specifications of your drive to see the types of discs it can write. Use TOSHIBA Disc Creator to write compact discs. Please refer to Chapter 4, Operating Basics for further information.

The read speed is slower at the centre of a disc and faster at the outer edge.

    L550/L550D/L555/L555D Opening the display The display panel can be opened to a wide range of angles for optimal viewing. While holding down the palm rest with one hand so that the main body of the computer is not raised, slowly lift the display panel - this will allow the angle of the display panel to be adjusted to provide optimum clarity.

    L550/L550D/L555/L555D Turning on the power This section describes how to turn on the power - the power indicator light will then indicate the status. Please refer to the Monitoring of power condition section in Chapter 6, Power and Power-up Modes, for more information.

    L550/L550D/L555/L555D Turning off the power The power can be turned off in one of three modes, either Shut Down Mode, Hibernation Mode or Sleep Mode. Shut Down Mode When you turn off the power in Shut Down Mode no data will be saved and the computer will boot to the operating system’s main screen the next time it is turned on.
  • Page 61 L550/L550D/L555/L555D Benefits of Hibernation Mode The Hibernation Mode feature provides the following benefits: Saves data to the hard disk drive when the computer automatically shuts down because of a low battery condition. You can return to your previous working environment immediately when you turn on the computer.
  • Page 62 L550/L550D/L555/L555D Sleep Mode If you have to interrupt your work, you are able to turn off the power without exiting from your software by placing the computer into Sleep Mode. In this mode data is maintained in the computer’s main memory so that when you turn on the power again, you can continue working right where you left off.

    L550/L550D/L555/L555D Chapter 4 Operating Basics This chapter describes the basic operations of your computer and highlights the precautions that should be taken when using it. Using the Touch Pad To use the Touch Pad, simply touch and move your fingertip across it in the direction you want the on-screen pointer to go.

    L550/L550D/L555/L555D Touch Pad Gesture There are four convenient gestures that make users operate the system easier and faster. Circular Motion You can scroll vertically and horizontally.   • Page 73 L550/L550D/L555/L555D When the disc tray is fully opened, the edge of the computer will extend slightly over the area where you insert the media. Therefore, when loading a CD, DVD or BD, you will need to turn it slightly at an angle when you place it in the disc tray.

  • Page 79 L550/L550D/L555/L555D If the disc is poor in quality, or is dirty or damaged, writing or rewriting errors may be noted - ensure that you check all discs for dirt or damage before you use them. The actual number of rewrites to CD-RW, DVD-RW, DVD+RW or DVD-RAM media will be affected by the quality of the disc itself and the way in which it is used.
  • Page 80 CD/DVD/BD - do not try to write from shared devices such as a server or any other network device. Writing with software other than TOSHIBA Disc Creator has not been confirmed, therefore operation with other software applications cannot be guaranteed.

  • Page 82 L550/L550D/L555/L555D You might not be able to use the “Disc Backup” function of TOSHIBA Disc Creator to back up a DVD-R, DVD-R (Dual Layer), DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+R (Double Layer) or DVD+RW disc that was made with other software on a different optical media recorder.
