Belt Maintenance

Servicing the Alternator Belt

Service Interval: After the first 10 hours—Check the
alternator belt tension.
Every 1,000 hours—Check the alternator belt tension.
Refer to the Engine Operator's Manual, included with the
machine, for the servicing procedure.

Servicing the Compressor Belt

Service Interval: After the first 10 hours—Check the
compressor belt tension.
Every 1,000 hours—Check the compressor belt
tension.
Model 31599 only
1. Loosen the compressor pivot bolt and adjusting bolt
(Figure
81).
2. Insert a torque wrench into the square hole in the
compressor bracket

3. Rotate the wrench until a torque of 37–45 N∙m (27–33
ft-lb) is attained.
4. Tighten the mounting bolts.
Replacing the Blade Drive
Belts
Service Interval: Every 50 hours—Inspect the blade drive
belts.
Every 1,000 hours—Replace the drive blade belts
The blade drive belt, tensioned by the spring loaded idler
pulley, is very durable. However, after many hours of use,
(Figure
81).

the belt will show signs of wear. Signs of a worn belt are:
squealing when belt is rotating, blades slipping when cutting
grass, frayed edges, burn marks and cracks. Replace the belt if
any of these conditions are evident.

Front Cutting Unit

1. Lower the cutting unit to the shop floor. Remove the
belt covers from the top of the cutting unit and set the
covers aside.
2. On the front deck, loosen the jam nuts on the idler
pulley stop screw and thread the stop screw in to the
bracket
(Figure
3. Using a ratchet wrench or similar tool, move the idler
pulley
(Figure
82) away from the drive belt to release
the belt tension and allow the belt to be slipped off
the deck pulleys.
