8.3 Establishing RS232 Communications

In this section we will look at how to connect your personal computer (PC) to the
MX920, allowing access to the powerful inbuilt menu system.
The RS232 programming port is part of the front Panel Microphone accessory socket.
You will be required to make a RS232 cable to be able to communicate with the in
built menu system software in the MX920.
Wiring must be performed by the appropriate qualified personal, incorrectly wiring
may cause damage to PC or MX920. Please contact your Dealer or Distributor should
you require the appropriate assistance.
The following equipment will be needed to make this interface cable:
A PC with RS232 port and a terminal emulator to run the built-in radio
configuration menu system software.
1 x DB9 or DB25 Female connector with back shell.
2 Metres of Flat phone cable or another RS232 complaint cable.
8P8C RJ45 male modular connector.
8P8C modular crimping tool.
1 x Pair of side cutters.
Soldering iron and 60/40 solder.
Multimeter.
+13.8V DC power supply.
Fitting the 8P8C RJ45 Male Modular connector.
1.
Cut and strip Cable end to suit the 8P8C RJ45 male modular connector
using modular crimping tool.
2.
Crimp connector on to cable.
Fitting the DB9 connector to Cable.
1.
Cut and strip Cable end to suit the DB9 connector using side cutters.
2.
Strip the wires which come from pins 5,7,8 of the 8P8C RJ45 Modular
male connector .
3.
Solder the wire which comes from pin7 RJ45 to pin2 DB9 (Transmitted
Data from PC) and the one which comes from pin8 RJ45 to pin 3 DB9
(Received Data from PC) of the DB9 connector.
4.
Strip and Pre-pare the third wire from which comes from pin 5 of RJ45
(Radio Earth).
5.
Solder this wire to pin 5 (Signal Ground from PC) of DB9 connector.
