    Seats and Seat Controls This part tells you about the seats and also about reclining front seatbacks, head restraints and rear folding seatbacks. Manual Front Seats CAUTION: You can lose control of the vehicle if you try to adjust a manual driver’s seat while the vehicle is moving.

    Reclining Front Seatbacks To adjust the seatback, lift the lever on the outer side of the seat. Release the lever to lock the seatback where you want it. Push on the seat to make sure it’s locked into position. Pull up on the lever, and the seat will go to its original upright position.
  • Page 16 But don’t have a seatback reclined if your vehicle is moving. CAUTION: Sitting in a reclined position when your vehicle is in motion can be dangerous. Even if you buckle up, your safety belts can’t do their job when you’re reclined like this. The shoulder belt can’t do its job because it won’t be against your body.

    Head Restraints Slide the head restraint up or down so that the top of the restraint is closest to the top of your ears. This position reduces the chance of a neck injury in a crash. Pull up to raise the head restraint. To lower it, push the release button and push down.

    If I’m a good driver, and I never drive far from home, why should I wear safety belts? You may be an excellent driver, but if you’re in an accident even one that isn’t your fault and your passengers can be hurt. Being a good driver doesn’t protect you from things beyond your control, such as bad drivers.
  • Page 26 3. Pick up the latch plate and pull the belt across you. Don’t let it get twisted. The shoulder belt may lock if you pull the belt across you very quickly. If this happens, let the belt go back slightly to unlock it. Then pull the belt across you more slowly.
  • Page 27 The lap part of the belt should be worn low and snug on the hips, just touching the thighs. In a crash, this applies force to the strong pelvic bones. And you’d be less likely to slide under the lap belt. If you slid under it, the belt would apply force at your abdomen.
  • Page 28 Adjust the height so that the shoulder portion of the belt is centered on your shoulder. The belt should be away from your face and neck, but not falling off your shoulder. What’s wrong with this? The shoulder belt is too loose. It won’t give nearly as much protection this way.

It should be worn over the shoulder at all times. 1-18 CAUTION: You can be seriously injured if you wear the shoulder belt under your arm. In a crash, your body would move too far forward, which would increase the chance of head and neck injury.

In a crash, you wouldn’t have the full width of the belt to spread impact forces. If a belt is twisted, make it straight so it can work properly, or ask your dealer to fix it.

    To unlatch the belt, just push the button on the buckle. The belt should go back out of the way. Before you close the door, be sure the belt is out of the way. If you slam the door on it, you can damage both the belt and your vehicle.

    The best way to protect the fetus is to protect the mother. When a safety belt is worn properly, it’s more likely that the fetus won’t be hurt in a crash. For pregnant women, as for anyone, the key to making safety belts effective is wearing them properly.

Air bags are designed to inflate only once. After an air bag inflates, you’ll need some new parts for your air bag system.

    Built in Child Restraint (Option) If your vehicle has this option, there’s a built in child restraint in the right rear seat position. This child restraint system conforms to all applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. This child restraint is designed for use only by children who weigh between 22 and 66 pounds (10 and 30 kg) and whose height is between 33.5 and 50 inches (850 and 1270 mm) and who are capable of sitting...

    What if the top of my child’s shoulders is above the shoulder belt slots for the five restraint harness system? A child whose shoulders are above the shoulder belt slots for the five point child restraint harness system shouldn’t use this child restraint. Instead, the child should sit on the vehicle’s seat cushion and use the vehicle’s adult safety belts.
  • Page 49 2. Pull the flap away from the fastener strip on the top of the seatback and lower the child restraint cushion. CAUTION: If a head restraint is not installed on the seatback properly, it could be thrown about the vehicle in a crash or sudden maneuver.
  • Page 50 3. Install the head restraint so that the front side faces the rear of the vehicle. Lower the head restraint so that it touches the top of the seatback. Make sure there is no gap between the lower edge of the head restraint and the top of the seatback.

    When choosing a child restraint, be sure the child restraint is designed to be used in a vehicle. If it is, it will have a label saying that it meets federal motor vehicle safety standards. Outsiders can easily enter through an unlocked door when you slow down or stop your vehicle.     Matching Transmitter(s) To Your Vehicle Each remote keyless entry transmitter is coded to prevent another transmitter from unlocking your vehicle.     New Vehicle “Break In” NOTICE: Your vehicle doesn’t need an elaborate “break in.” But it will perform better in the long run if you follow these guidelines: Don’t drive at any one speed slow for the first 500 miles (805 km). Don’t make full throttle starts.

    Starting Your Engine Automatic Transaxle Move your shift lever to PARK (P) or NEUTRAL (N). Your engine won’t start in any other position a safety feature. To restart when you’re already moving, use NEUTRAL (N) only. NOTICE: Don’t try to shift to PARK (P) if your vehicle is moving.

Wait about 15 seconds between each try to help avoid draining your battery or damaging your starter. When your engine has run about 10 seconds to warm up, your vehicle is ready to be driven.

    Automatic Transaxle Operation There are several different positions for your shift lever. PARK (P): This locks your front wheels. It’s the best position to use when you start your engine because your vehicle can’t move easily. CAUTION: It is dangerous to get out of your vehicle if the shift lever is not fully in PARK (P) with the parking brake firmly set.

You have to fully apply your regular brakes before you can shift from PARK (P) when the ignition key is in ON.     Overdrive (Option) If your automatic transaxle has an OVERDRIVE OFF switch it will be located on the left side of the shift lever. Press the OVERDRIVE OFF switch to turn off overdrive. A light on the instrument panel cluster will come on when this feature is used.
