Ø11 mm CPS Laser Diode Mounting Kit

Chapter 4 Setup and Operation

4.1.

Setup

1.
Unpack the contents of the kit.
2.
Insert a Laser Module into the AD11F and tighten setscrews with a 1/16"
(1.5 mm) hex key (included) or ball driver.
Note: The knurled knob used for focus adjustment on the focus adjustable
laser modules is too large for the mounting adapter bore. This knob can be
unthreaded to mount the diode module in the same manner as the collimated
versions. Please make sure to loosen the setscrews locking the knob in place
using a 0.9 mm hex wrench before unthreading; not doing so can damage the
threading. Alternatively, the module can be mounted by sliding the phono plug
and cord through the adapter first.
3.
Verify that the line voltage setting on the LDS5 Power Supply indicates
the correct operating AC voltage (115 VAC or 230 VAC). Refer to Section
5.1.1, page 5 if the voltage selection needs to be changed.
4.
Plug the laser module power cable into the DC cable of the LDS5.
5.
Attach the AC line cord to the LDS5 power supply and plug into an AC
outlet.
6.
Turn on the power supply.
7.
Follow laser safety precautions.
4.2.

Operating and Handling Precautions

Before connecting the laser diode to the supply circuit, make sure that there are
no transients that could make the laser diode output exceed the maximum rating
for radiant flux or forward current. Current transients should be carefully avoided
since they may destroy the laser or substantially decrease the laser diode lifetime.
The following precautions should be taken to avoid failure of the device:
Workers and workbenches should be grounded to a common stable earth
at all times when working with laser diodes.
All equipment, including power supplies, soldering irons, etc. must be
grounded to a common stable earth.
Power supplies should be well regulated and free of transients.
Maximum soldering temperature is 250 °C for a maximum of 5 seconds.
Never connect or disconnect any components or external equipment,
such as voltmeters, to or from the device circuit while the power is on.
Mechanical clamping should take place along the cylinder without any
mechanical deformation of the housing (advised maximum force: 20 N).
Do not look into an operating laser diode through a microscope!
