for the FC4600 Drive Tray

Before you begin
For warnings, refer to the printed Safety Notices
document.
For detailed installation instructions, refer to either the CE4900
Controller-Drive Tray Installation Guide or the CE7900 Controller Tray
Installation Guide.
What you need for assembly:

FC4600 drive tray (for connection to either a CE4900
controller-drive tray or a CE7900 controller tray):
One three-unit (3U) -high FC4600 drive tray
Two Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) transceivers
One cabinet-mounting hardware kit
Options:
Drives (two minimum for each drive tray)
DC power cords for the optional –48 VDC power option
Two SFP transceivers for each fi ber-optic cable
Two fi ber-optic cables or two copper cables for each drive tray
connection
One rail-mounting hardware kit
If you have any questions about the fi rmware or your confi guration,
contact your Customer and Technical Support representative.
Tools:
A medium fl at-blade screwdriver
A No. 2 Phillips screwdriver
Anti-static protection
Labels – To help you to identify cable connections and to trace
cables more easily
A cart – To hold the drive tray and its components
A fl ashlight

Install the mounting rails
You can install the drive tray into an industry-standard cabinet.
There must be a minimum depth of 76 cm (30 in.) between the front
EIA support rails and the rear EIA support rails.
Position the mounting rails in the cabinet.

If you are installing the mounting rails above an existing tray,
position the mounting rails directly above the tray.
If you are installing the mounting rails below an existing tray,
allow 13.34-cm (5.25-in.) vertical clearance for the FC4600
drive tray.

From the front of the cabinet, with the mounting-rail fl anges inside of

the cabinet's mounting rail assemblies, use the Phillips screwdriver to
loosely tighten only the lower screw.
From the rear of the cabinet, use the Phillips screwdriver to loosely

tighten the two screws. Do not completely tighten the screws until you
have installed the drive tray in the cabinet.
Repeat step 2.1 through step 2.3 for the right mounting rail.

Tighten the fl at-head rail adjustment screws on both mounting rails.

Install the drive tray

Three persons are required to safely lift the component.
With the help of two other persons, remove the drive tray and all

contents from the shipping box.

With the help of two other persons, slide the rear of the drive tray onto

the mounting rails so that the mounting holes on the front fl anges
of the drive tray align with the mounting holes on the front of the
mounting rails.
By using four screws, secure the front of the drive tray to the front of

the cabinet.

Secure the rear of the drive tray to the cabinet by using two screws

to attach the fl ange on each side of the rear of the drive tray to the
mounting rails.

Set the Link Rate switch
Check to see if the Link Rate switch is set to the 4-Gb/s date transfer

rate.
• If the link rate is set to 4-Gb/s, do not change the setting.
• If the link rate is set to 2-Gb/s, go to step 4.2.
Make sure that no power is applied to the controller or the controller-

drive tray.
Move the switch to the 4-Gb/s (left) position.

Install the drives
WARNING (W18) Risk of bodily injury – Do not use equipment in
the cabinet as a shelf or a workspace.
Beginning with the fi rst drive slot on the left side of the drive tray, place

the drive on the slot guides, and slide the drive all the way into the slot.
Push the drive handle down to lock the drive securely in place.

Install the second drive to the right of the fi rst drive.
5.3
Install the other drives to the right of the last installed drive.

Connect the cables
WARNING (W03) Risk of exposure to laser radiation – Do not
disassemble or remove any part of a Small Form-factor Pluggable
(SFP) transceiver because you might be exposed to laser radiation.
In this step, you connect the FC4600 drive tray to a CE7900 controller
tray, to a CE4900 controller-drive tray, or to another FC4600 drive tray
in the storage array. For more information, refer to the appropriate
documents:

Controller-to-Drive Tray Cabling
Attach the appropriate cables to the ESMs on the drive tray for the FC

protocol.
When you are fi nished, label each end of the cable with information

about its connection.
The images on the following page show cabling diagrams with the
FC4600 drive tray connected to a CE7900 controller tray and a
CE4900 controller-drive tray, respectively.
