Driver Airbag
The airbag (1) is located in the ste e r
ing wheel hub and, in conjunction
with wearing the seat belts with emer
gency tensioning retractors (2), pro
vides increased protection fo r the
driver.
The operational readiness of the sup
plemental restraint system (airbag) is
verified by the indicator lamp
" SRS" (3) in the instrum ent cluster.
With the key in steering lock posi
tion 1 or 2, the indicator lamp comes
on fo r about 10 seconds then goes
out. If it d o e sn 't come on, doesn't go
out, flickers on and off, or com es on
while driving, the system is m alfunc
tioning.
This will not cause the supplemental
restraint system to be activated. How
ever, we strongly recom m end that
you visit an authorized MERCEDES-
BENZ dealer immediately to have the
system checked; otherwise the
" SRS" may not be activated in a sev
ere frontal accident.
The airbag is designed to activate
only in severe frontal impacts within
the shaded area shown in the illustra
tion on page 36. Only during these
types of im pacts will it provide its sup
plemental protection. The driver
should always wear the seat belt, o th
erwise it is not possible fo r the airbag
to provide its intended protection.
In cases of less severe frontal
impacts, roll-overs, side or rear colli
sions, or other accidents w ithout sev
ere frontal forces, the airbag will not
be activated. The driver and other
passengers will then be protected by
the fastened seat belts.
