5. The Controls and what they do
POWER ON/OFF & Sensitivity
This control turns the instrument on and off and it also controls the sensitivity of the device. Turn
the control to the far right for maximum sensitivity. Turn the control to the left as far as
necessary in case of a false reading. Note that turning the control to the left reduces the
maximum detection range. Models that do not have a microprocessor operate in a similar way.
The CS8SST, however, is also designed to increasingly desensitise itself to mineralised ground
as you turn the control the left.
Discrimination (DISC)
This is a full-range discrimination control. Turn the control to the far left for zero discrimination.
Turn the control to the far right to reject zinc and screw caps. Zero discrimination allows the
instrument to operate in the all-metal mode. There is no discrimination at all and all available
targets are picked up, with exception of the soil itself. A couple of examples of the DISC control
setting : iron is rejected when the control is placed at ± 8 or 9 o'clock. Most ring pulls are
rejected at ± the 2 or 3 o'clock position.
NOTCH SELECT & NOTCH WIDTH
Note that the notch function is disabled when either the DISC control or the notch controls are
turned to the extreme left.
The notch feature accepts or rejects a target. Targets selected by the notch controls are
accepted when the NOTCH SELECT control is placed at a lower level than the DISC control
(but not to the extreme left). Those same targets are rejected when the NOTCH SELECT
control is placed at a higher level than the DISC control. Try this by setting the DISC control to
reject foil. Now set the NOTCH SELECT control to reject ring pulls. It is possible to set the
NOTCH WIDTH so that every target type from ring pulls to screw caps is rejected. This
approach works well for rejecting or accepting certain targets or groups of targets. Turn the
NOTCH SELECT and NOTCH WIDTH controls to the far right to turn off the notch feature.
NOTCH WIDTH
This control works in conjunction with the NOTCH SELECT control. The NOTCH WIDTH control
varies the NOTCH WIDTH from just a fraction to a max. of ±30°. Place the NOTCH WIDTH
control in the 12 o'clock position when you are trying to find a single target. Normally you will not
have to change this width setting. Some users prefer a very narrow NOTCH WIDTH while
others prefer it wide. Turning the NOTCH WIDTH control counterclockwise will narrow the width.
Do not turn the NOTCH WIDTH control too far to the left : the band would become too narrow
and the notching feature would no longer work. A good position would be 5 o'clock, since it
allows the user to find more than one or perhaps even a group of objects.
OVERDRIVE
Large targets or targets close to the search head can send the device into overdrive and
produce a false audio signal and LED reading. The device produces a "motor boat" sound when
going into overdrive and the error LED will light on the far left of the bar graph. Raise the search
head to end the overdrive and sweep the target again.
