On guard against attacks.
To access the Internet, all PC users on the router's LAN side
use Network Address Translation (NAT), which provides firewall
protection for the local network.
And, to further reduce the hacker activity risk, the router
defends against a wide number of common Internet attacks,
including Denial of Service, PING of Death, and RIP defect.
The router can also alert you by e-mail if Internet attacks occur.
The router guards against attacks by restricting its
connections parameters, in which you define the type of traffic
you want on your LAN. For instance, you can control which PC
client uses what services and also the time period in which
they can have access to those services.
If you have a local client PC that cannot run an Internet
application properly from behind the NAT firewall, you can open
the client to unrestricted two-way Internet access by defining a
DMZ host. The DMZ function enables you to redirect all packets
going to your WAN port IP address to a particular IP address in
your LAN.
You can also set up a "virtual" server with the Pure
Networking Broadband Router. Through this, different clients
on your LAN can handle different services or applications that
are accessible by Internet users. For example, one can handle
e-mail traffic while another hosts FTP activity.
The router also enables one or more public IP address(es)
to be mapped to a pool of local private IP address(es), a feature
that's particularly useful when you have multiple global IPs and
want to divide local users into different groups.
Front-panel indicators keep you informed of all the router's
activity. If, for instance, the WAN LED illuminates green, you
know the WAN port is connected and ready to send data
at 100 Mbps. If it's yellow, the port supports 10-Mbps data
transfers. If the WAN LED flashes, activity is being sent. Per-port
LEDs alert you to 10- and 100-Mbps readiness and activity on
each of the LAN segments, too.

• External ADSL or cable modem with an RJ-45 Ethernet port.
• A network interface card (NIC) for each PC. For optimum
performance, order the Pure Networking PCI Bus Network
Adapter (see right).
• Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher, or Netscape Navigator
higher, Web browser installed on each PC.
