CONTENTS OF THIS CHAPTER

This chapter contains a brief description of the various units that comprise the RMS-555
Radio Management System, along with an explanation of the various configurations of
the RMS-555 Radio Management System that are available.
1.1

DESCRIPTION OF EQUIPMENT

The RMS-555 Radio Management System replaces many individual radio controls,
control heads, or tuning units with one Radio Management Unit (RMU) installed in the
cockpit, and a remote mounted Data Adapter. The specific equipment models that
comprise the RMS-555 System are pictured below in Figure 1-1 and are briefly
described in the following sections.

1.1.1 RMU-556 Radio Management Unit (RMU)

The flight crew utilizes the RMU-556 (RMU) to control various Communication,
Navigation, and Identification equipment (CNI) aboard the aircraft. All operating
controls for the connected CNI except receiver audio level are incorporated in the RMU.
Receiver audio controls are included in the audio selector panel installed in the aircraft.
In response to the crew manipulating the various controls of the RMU, digital data is
transmitted to the KDA-557 Data Adapter.

1.1.2 KDA-557 Data Adapter (KDA)

Digital data from the RMU is transmitted to the KDA-557 where it is processed, and
transmitted directly to the specific CNI requiring new information. The KDA-557 also
listens for return information from the connected CNI, comparing actual status with that
commanded by the RMS-555 System.
