Replacing the Engine Oil

WARNING
Personal injury. Before performing any maintenance procedure
or inspection, stop the engine, and allow all parts to cool.
Disconnect spark plug wire and keep spark plug wire away
from spark plug. Failure to do so could result in serious injury.
WARNING
Risk of burns. Allow engine to cool before
draining oil or coolant. Failure to do so could
result in death or serious injury.
WARNING
Skin irritation. Avoid prolonged or repeated contact with
used motor oil. Used motor oil has been shown to cause
skin cancer in laboratory animals. Thoroughly wash
exposed areas with soap and water.
CAUTION
Engine damage. Verify proper type and quantity of
engine oil prior to starting engine. Failure to do so
could result in engine damage.
NOTE: Drain oil when engine is warm. Warm oil drains
more completely.
Proceed as follows to replace engine oil:
1. See
Figure
4-1. Set machine on a level surface
and place a waste oil container under oil drain plug
(A).

2. Remove oil drain plug and allow oil to drain into
container.
3. Replace oil drain plug.
4. Fill with recommended engine oil. See
Engine Oil
for more information.
5. Replace oil fill/dipstick when finished.

7. Add 17–20 oz (0.5–0.59 L) of oil recommended by
the engine manufacturer. Wait one minute for oil to
settle.
8. Insert oil fill/dipstick. Do not screw in completely.
9. Remove oil fill/dipstick and check oil level. Clean oil
dipstick with a clean rag after checking.

a time and check oil fill/dipstick until oil level is in
hatched area (C) between the bottom of the oil dip-
stick (D) and H(igh) mark (E). Do not overfill.

11. Insert oil fill/dipstick completely when full.
