by HumanWare
Getting Started session with Victor Reader Classic
Welcome to Victor Reader Classic, your new digital talking book player. Simple and friendly,
Victor Reader Classic is ideal to listen to your favorite best-sellers, novels, and magazines
recorded on CD-ROM. Compact, portable and sturdy, Victor Reader Classic goes anywhere with
you, with it's optional rechargeable batteries and built-in carrying handle.
The first time you use Victor Reader you should connect the unit to a power outlet even if it's
equipped with the rechargeable batteries. The batteries may have lost power during shipping
even though they were charged before leaving the factory. For safety reasons, the battery
compartment is sealed. Only HumanWare or an authorized service center should replace
batteries.
To connect to a power outlet, plug one end of the provided AC/DC power cord in the power jack,
which is the uppermost jack of the four jacks located on the right side of the unit and the other
end in an electrical outlet. Please note that you can use Victor Reader while charging the
batteries.
The box you just opened contains the following items: A Victor Reader Classic, a power cord
located under a cardboard separator, a plastic bag containing documentation and the CD you are
currently listening to, containing a Getting Started session followed by the User's Guide.
This introductory session will give step-by-step instructions and the basic information needed in
order to use Victor Reader correctly. First you will hear a physical description of the unit. Then
we will introduce Victor Reader easy-to-use features.
This introduction is not a complete training session but the User's Guide provided on this CD
will help you with specific information about Victor Reader's operation, as you need it.
Before we begin, note that you can interrupt this session at any time by simply pressing the
Play/Stop key, which is located at the bottom center of the face, between the Rewind and Fast-
Forward keys. When you are ready to continue the session, simply press the Play/Stop key
again.
We are now ready to start the session.
First, a physical description of Victor Reader Classic. Have the unit positioned in front of you so
that you can explore it.
A large carrying handle, for easy transport, is located on the left side. A built-in speaker is
located on the upper left corner of the face.

    1. Why does Victor Reader not always announce the same DAISY levels when I press the Up and Down keys? The Up and Down keys cycle through the DAISY navigation levels provided by the producer of the book. Not all DAISY books have the same navigation levels. For example, your book’s producer may have only inserted level 1 (often used for chapters) marks into the book.
  • Page 17 Extensive DAISY navigation is done as this causes more frequent use of the CD drive and thus consumes more power. The batteries will last less than half as long or about 2 hours if playing standard (type CD-DA) music or book CD’s. The batteries will last about 3 hours if playing non DAISY MP3 music or book CD’s.

    7. Can I replace my batteries? No. For safety reasons, the batteries are sealed and must be replaced by HumanWare or an authorized dealer. 8. How many times can I recharge my batteries before they require replacement? The batteries are rated for 500 charge/discharge cycles.

    10. What does the message, “Audio format not supported” mean? The CD has audio files that Victor Reader recognizes but the files are formatted in a way that is incompatible with the Victor Reader software. You should notify HumanWare technical support.

    2. Can the internal Victor Reader software be updated? Yes. When HumanWare upgrades the Classic software, customers are able to install the new software by simply inserting a special upgrade CD into the player, which automatically refreshes its internal software program. The upgrade CD may be obtained from HumanWare customer support, directly downloaded from the HumanWare website, or from some dealers who provide this support.
