Adjusting the Self-propel Drive

If the lawn mower does not self-propel, or it self-propels
when control bar is more than 1 / in. (38 mm) from the
handle, adjust the gear control cable and the wheel drive
cable.
Adjusting the Control Cable
1. Stop the engine and wait for all moving parts to stop.
2. Disconnect the wire from the spark plug (Fig. 22).
3. Remove the bolts that secure the belt cover (Fig. 30) to
the lawn mower housing and lift off the cover.
4. Move the ground speed control lever into the Neutral
position and as far back as possible.
5. Loosen the cable retaining screw (Fig. 32).
6. Move the shift lever to the right until it is tight against
the stop on the gear case (Fig. 32).
7. Pull the cable through the cable retainer to the right to
remove any slack (Fig. 32).

8. Tighten the cable retaining screw.
9. Install the belt cover.
Adjusting the Wheel Drive Cable
1. Close the door in the lawn mower housing and remove
the bag.
2. Rotate the control knob clockwise / turn if the lawn
mower does not self-propel. If the lawn mower creeps
forward, rotate the knob / turn counterclockwise to
loosen the belt (Fig. 33).

3. Slowly pull the lawn mower backward while you
gradually move the control bar toward the handle.
Note: The adjustment is correct when the rear wheels stop
turning and the control bar is about one inch (2.5 cm)
from the handle (Fig. 34).

Cleaning the Muffler and the
Exhaust Port
Clean the end of the muffler pipe and the exhaust port
after every 75 hours of operation.
Caution
The muffler and the engine surface become hot
when the lawn mower is in operation. Contact
with the hot muffler surface can burn you.
Clean the muffler and the exhaust port only after
the engine and the muffler are cool.
