1 General Information Introduction The ATS-6501 Tflex is a state-of-the-art GPS Disciplined time and frequency reference. It utilizes an internal rubidium (Rb) atomic clock and low noise synthesizer (LNS) in conjunction with GPS measurements to provide outputs that are characterized by the short-term stability of the atomic clock and the long-term stability of the GPS constellation.

None of the options are mutually exclusive so users can select as many options as desired.
DOC06501_Revision F ATS-6501 Users Guide 2 Installation The ATS-6501 provides a number of features which may require additional setup and this section provides a guideline for the basic setup. After completing this section, the ATS-6501 will produce timing outputs to the coarse calibration accuracies specified in Appendix A. The ATS- 6501 is designed to be quickly and easily integrated with other system components.
DOC06501_Revision F ATS-6501 Users Guide Oscillator Lock light comes on. This is normal and does not indicate there is a problem with the unit. Communicating with the ATS-6501 Operators are capable of communicating with the system through a LAN connection or via one of the USB Ports when using OP001 USB to Serial cable to access the command port.

For applications requiring the highest level of accuracy, the ATS-6501 should be calibrated at Symmetricom. This process involves installing the user’s antenna and antenna cable at the factory and comparing the PPS outputs to a system which has a known offset to UTC(USNO).
Users may decide to provide an EXTERNAL frequency reference to the ATS-6501. The external frequency reference may be monitored by the ATS-6501 via RS232 through either of the USB Connectors on the rear of the unit (OP001). The Symmetricom 5071A is the only model...

If this is done and a new user default logging configuration is not saved, the system will use the factory defaults when rebooted or power cycled. Use the settings gps_logging:ftp or gps_logging:rt command to ensure the system is using the desired settings based on the newly loaded configuration file.
DOC06501_Revision F ATS-6501 Users Guide Operations Two distinct tasks are performed by the ATS-6501 1) collection of GPS measurement data 2) the generation of timing signals. These two tasks are entirely separate except for the fact that they must share CPU time and data from the GPS receiver. Because the generation of timing signals requires that events (e.g., clock steering) occur at very specific times, operational precedence is always given to timing tasks.

DOC06501_Revision F ATS-6501 Users Guide Connection to a local area network (LAN) is supported by the ATS-6501. This allows users to access the unit remotely and also provides error monitoring capabilities. In addition, the ATS-6501 can serve as the source of network time for other systems on the network if using network time protocol (NTP).
DOC06501_Revision F ATS-6501 Users Guide [sw_version] 3.400 3.3.2 Software Updates Upgrading the software can be accomplished via two methods. 3.3.2.1 Flash Card Replacement This requires removing the currently installed flash disk and installing a new one which has the updated software. Power the system down, press and release the SD card located in the SD Card slot on the front panel.
Users obtain software image from Symmetricom Note: ftp://ftp.timing.com/pub/ATS-6501. If the software update is not applied and the unit is rebooted or power cycled users will need to upload the .iso file again in order to update the system software. 3.3.3 GPS Firmware Updates Updating the firmware on the GPS receiver requires that the GPS receiver be removed from the system, updated, and reinstalled.
DOC06501_Revision F ATS-6501 Users Guide User Interfaces Software interfaces on the ATS-6501 are limited in their ability to provide users with real-time control. Adjusting some system parameters during operation of the ATS-6501 can seriously impact the timing performance of the unit and therefore the ability to adjust these parameters is limited by the software.

DOC06501_Revision F ATS-6501 Users Guide The fiber optic outputs from the 4372A module, when plugged into an ATS 6501, contain a proprietary bit stream with 1 PPS marker and time code information. The ATS 6511A (Dual Fiber Input Timing Distribution) decodes this bit stream, extracts the time code, and steers its internal OCXO to the frequency and phase of the fiber signal.

DOC06501_Revision F ATS-6501 Users Guide track the signal received from GPS satellites. This process usually takes 5 to 10 minutes but may take as long as 30 minutes depending upon how long the ATS-6501 has been powered off. After four satellites are being tracked by the GPS receiver, the PPS output is adjusted so that it is aligned with UTC(USNO).
Although this schedule is sufficient for most applications, it may be necessary to increase the number of scheduled maintenance events for extremely dusty or dirty environments. Contact Symmetricom if there are questions about the scheduled maintenance cycle. A minimal amount of maintenance is required for the ATS-6501. It is designed to operate continuously over long periods of time with little to no interaction.
DOC06501_Revision F ATS-6501 Users Guide 4. Inspect the antenna. Clean any buildup of dirt or other contaminants from the surface of the antenna. These contaminants may degrade the strength of the GPS signal. If the antenna has been damaged by the weather, replace it. 5.
