Limited-Use Public Health Emergency
Powered Air Purifying Respirator
(PAPR) Assembly
This device has been approved by NIOSH in accordance with its
Limited Public Health Emergency PAPR guidance issued in April
2020 and adheres to FDA's March 28, 2020 letter addressing use
of NIOSH approved PAPRs. Use of this device is authorized only
until the declaration that circumstances exist justifying the
authorization of the emergency use of personal respiratory
protective devices during the COVID-19 outbreak is terminated
under Section 564(b)(2) of the Federal Food, Drug, and
Cosmetic (FD&C) Act, or until the Emergency Use Authorization
is revoked under Section 564(g) of the FD&C Act, or until the
approved configuration can no longer be maintained, whichever
is shorter.
IMPORTANT: Before use, the wearer must read and understand
these User Instructions. Keep these User Instructions for reference.

    System Description The Limited-Use Public Health Emergency PAPR assembly is designed to be used with the Ford hoodtop listed on the approval label to form a complete National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) approved respiratory system. This device may only be used in accordance with the Important Notice on page 1 of these User Instructions.

    Plan to leave the contaminated area immediately if the low battery alarm activates to obtain a fully charged battery before automatic shutdown of the PAPR. Designed primarily for use in indoor, climate-controlled environments. Unit airflow does not compensate for high altitudes. Unit has been calibrated at sea level.

    RESPIRATOR PROGRAM MANAGEMENT — 7 RESPIRATOR PROGRAM MANAGEMENT Occupational use of respirators must be in compliance with applicable health and safety standards. By United States regulation, employers must establish a written respirator protection program meeting the requirements of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Respiratory Protection standard 29 CFR 1910.134 and any applicable OSHA substance specific standards.

  • Page 13 10 — UNPACKING AND BATTERY CHARGING To charge a battery pack: 1. Plug the charger into an appropriate outlet before inserting battery pack. 2. Insert the battery pack (Fig. 1-1) into the charger, making sure the battery pack is fully seated in the charger. The red (charging) light will blink continuously indicating that the charging process has started.

    Note: Only certain 20V DeWalt battery packs (DCB230, DCB205) can be used with the Limited-Use Public Health Emergency PAPR. Attempts to use any other battery pack will void the NIOSH approval, system warranty, may not provide respiratory protection, and may damage the PAPR.

    2. With the “TO BLOWER” label facing away from the user’s body, align the orientation marks with the 2 ribs (Fig. 4a) on the outlet of the PAPR unit. The loop in the tube should be to the user’s left side (Fig. 4b).
  • Page 17 14 — COMPONENT DESCRIPTION AND ASSEMBLY 4. Holding the hood connector (with Ford oval label), guide the hood end of the tube over the end of the tube at the PAPR unit (Fig. 4b). 5. Push the connector straight onto the hood spigot until it clicks in place.

    Hoodtop The Limited-Use Public Health Emergency PAPR is approved for use with a Ford hoodtop only. Refer to the hoodtop User Instructions in Appendix A of this document for information on attaching and donning the hoodtop to be used, and to determine Assigned Protection Factor (APF) for the complete respiratory protection system.

    Fig. 5 – Belt Install Filter The high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter used in the system is not replaceable. If the filter becomes clogged, damaged, or immersed, or if the system stops working, discontinue using PAPR immediately. Do not attempt to change filter.

    1. PAPR system: Closely inspect the entire PAPR system including the blower unit, breathing tube, battery, belt, and hoodtop. Pay particular attention to component connection points for wear or damage. If parts are missing or damaged, do not use PAPR assembly.
  • Page 22 The Air Flow Indicator must be used to verify minimum required airflow is attained prior to each use. During use, if you suspect the PAPR is not delivering a minimum of 170 lpm (6 cfm), exit the contaminated area, see your supervisor, and recheck the airflow with the Air Flow Indicator.

    CONTAMINATED AREA Prior to entering the contaminated area, complete the inspection procedures listed in these User Instructions and ensure the selected PAPR setup is appropriate protection for the given airborne contaminant and concentration. 1. Turn the blower unit on. 2. Check the airflow with the Air Flow Indicator.

    Cleaning and Disinfecting It is important to always read and follow the PAPR and hoodtop User Instructions for donning, doffing, use, and storage of the assembly. The following general guidelines are for cleaning and/or disinfecting your Limited-Use Public Health Emergency PAPR assembly.
  • Page 25 Wipe the belt. Replace the cloth if it becomes visibly dirty. Disinfecting Disinfect the PAPR assembly with the disinfectant cleaner. Follow the user instructions and/or EPA label for the selected disinfectant. Surfaces must be visibly wet with disinfectant for the full specified contact time.

    After Cleaning and Drying 1. Reassemble unit as described in the User Instructions. 2. Inspect the PAPR unit and hoodtop following the inspection procedures in the User Instructions for that item. Always read and follow the user instructions and/or EPA label for your selected disinfectant.

    Battery packs should be charged prior to storage. For short-term storage, the battery pack may be left attached to the blower unit. Refer to the Limited-Use Public Health Emergency PAPR User Instructions for specific maintenance and storage recommendations. Normal use of the battery and natural aging of battery cells will gradually decrease the battery’s available capacity.

    Breathing Tubes and Adapters Connecting the breathing tube Connect the end of the breathing tube with the Ford oval label by pushing quick release end of the breathing tube (i.e. the end with the pinch clip) onto the air inlet of the hoodtop. The breathing tube should make an audible click when attached.

    Storage Hang your Limited-Use Public Health Emergency PAPR hoodtop by the loop sewn into the top of the hoodtop or lay it flat. Never fold or crush the visor. Store product in a clean area that is protected from contamination, damage, dirt, debris, product distortion, UV, and direct sunlight.
